26th Annual Alton C. Allen Historical Conference set for Saturday, Oct. 19

The 26th Annual Alton C. Allen Historical Conference is on tap for Saturday, Oct. 19.

According to Lavaca County Historical Commission chairman Doug Kubicek the topics for this year’s conference is about cemeteries in Texas.

“Many counties in Texas are having trouble with cemetery maintenance,” Kubicek said. “The conference for this year hopes to use the Texas Historical Commission staff in providing suggestions in this regards to this matter.”

Kubicek said staff members with the THC, Carlyn Copeland Hammons and Jenny McWilliams will present topics regarding a focus on the keys to building resiliency in historic cemeteries.

“People who care about historic cemeteries will learn strategies they can implement to overcome common challenges, ensuring the protection and long-term preservation of these sites for generations to come,” Kubicek said.

The conference will be held at the St. Peter Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall with a charge of $10 per person. The cost includes a chicken noodle soup and chicken salad sandwich for lunch.

Kubicek said seating is limited and those planning to attend by pre-registering guarantees a ticket to the event.

He said you can register the day of the conference, but pre-registering guarantees a ticket and helps them better prepare.

The pre-registration deadline is Oct. 12 and checks should be made payable to the Lavaca County Historical Commission.
