3rd Annual Pivo and Kolaches .5K held March 23

The Shiner Lions Club hosted the 3rd Annual Pivo and Kolaches .5K on March 23 in Green Dickson Park. All proceeds from this year’s Pivo and Kolaches .5K benefited the Alzheimer’s Association.
This event began in 2021, and after taking 2023 off, the Shiner Lions Club was excited to bring back the event. The theme of the event was pivo, kolaches, and polka, and all three were enjoyed by attendees.
With our largest turnout of 150 participants in the .5K, the event was full of laughter, beer, dancing, and cheers! Attendees of the event listened to live music by Long Shot and the Shiner Hobo Band, enjoyed delicious food including Shiner rice and Maeker’s sausage on a stick topped with a Bea’s kolache, participated in chicken bingo, and drank plenty of beer from the Spoetzl Brewery.
The .5K race, a total of 1,064 feet, had several stops including cornhole, hula hoops, beer pong, and kolache eating. Several participants showed up in costume, and all of the “racers” dashed to the finish line with their stein filled with Shiner Bock.
Cate Bailey finished in 1st place, Bethany Kaspar finished in 2nd place, John Zak finished in 3rd place, and bringing up the rear was Brenda Gohmert.
The Shiner Royalty selected Karrie Kocian, Monique Pohler, Julie Boehm, and Wendy Boedeker as the winners of this year’s costume contest.
This event was made successful in a large part because of our volunteers, the Shiner royalty, and our sponsors.  We encourage everyone to start training (“drinking beer and eating kolaches”) for the 4th Annual Pivo and Kolaches .5K in 2025.
