Chamber requests route change

In a very brief agenda, the Shiner Chamber of Commerce made a couple of requests to Shiner City Council members at the April 1 meeting.
One of these regards changing the parade entries lineup for Shiner Half Moon Holidays.
In years past, the line up for the parade started on 16th Street by Maeker’s Sausage & Processing.
“That highway remains open, so we have truckers coming down the entire time that we’re lining up,” Shiner Chamber Executive Director Sarah Langhoff said. “We also have floats on either side of that road parked over there for about two hours (before the parade.) Our first concern is getting the line up off that (street) for safety.”
Another reason the Chamber wants to change this route is to encourage people to get out to the Green-Dickson Park for Half Moon Holidays.
“One of the things we’ve seen that seems to work well in other communities is that their parade ends at the park where their festival is,” Langhoff said. “You see a huge influx of people (that go to the park.) So, it’s two-fold, we want to (assist in) safety and also get more attendance at the park.”
With these proposed changes, the Chamber is asking for the lineup to start on St. Ludmila Street and then end at the first road that turns into Green-Dickson Park.
Some concerns from council and Police Chief Wayne Denson were road closures and adequate staff needed to control traffic. Council did end up approving this request, so long as the Chamber of Commerce and the Shiner Police Department coincide more on logistics of the route.
Shiner Chamber also requested to use Welhausen Park for their Royalty Float unveiling. They will exhibit their new float and invite the community and local clergy to bless the float and the community of Shiner.
Also on the agenda, a payment in the amount of $152,334.18 was made to WJC Constructors for work to be performed on the force draft aerator and tower. The funds will be withdrawn from ARPA.
