Chris Wegener named High School Principal of the Year

A member from Region III named High School Principal Chris Wegener as “High School Principal of the Year” for all of that region at the Shiner ISD board meeting.
Region III consists of schools within Lavaca, DeWitt, Goliad, Refugio, Calhoun, Matagorda, Jackson, Wharton, Colorado and Karnes Counties.
“We have two amazing principals that are leading our campus at Shiner ISD and we’re very, very proud of them and the work that they do each day,” SISD Superintendent Alex Remschel said. “They’re an amazing team together on top of all of that. We’re very proud of both of them.”
Construction updates were also given at the meeting.
“Things are moving right along,” Remschel said. “We were going to do another check over the weight room, but there’s some fire alarm stuff that has to be taken care of prior to that. This is the first week that the weight equipment was moved into the girl’s weight room. The flooring is done, and the paint is done. The seals between the buildings still have to be done in the weight room.”
The Career and Technology Education (CTE) Building is aimed to be done by the end of the semester.
“We’re going to do another punch and then we’ll be able to move into the spring semester of that classroom,” Remschel said.
The Junior High School addition is moving along too as well.
“They’re getting the walls in and taken care of,” Remschel said.
Concrete will be put in by the Band Hall and the Gymnasium.
“That concrete is going to be solid concrete and will continue around the curb,” Remschel said.
“We’re doing concrete ramps from the weight room and to the road as well. We are putting a sidewalk that goes from the new CTE building up to the backside of the school as well.”
The district also upgraded the paint for the lines at the game fields.
“Instead of using spray paint cans that we’ve been using for years, we have bought a field striper machine and five gallon buckets of paint to do that,” Remschel said. “It’s actually cheaper and more effective.”
During the cafeteria report, it was shown that there was a drop in regular breakfast and lunch purchases; however, there was a spike in free and reduced lunch orders.
“We have made some improvements with our cafeteria,” Remschel said.
“Every week, we’re doing home-cooked meals and we’re seeing better participation from our students and staff as a result of that.
We got some good recipes over the summer and have been implementing that weekly.”
Other items on the agenda include:
• SISD board members considered appointing people to the School Health Advisory Council.
• Student enrollment numbers are holding steady at 700 students.
• SISD board members approved a yearly renewal of membership in Walsh Gallegos’ Retainer Program.
• SISD presented the Transportation Operations Report for the 2023-24 school year.
