City Council adopts tax rate, approves request from Pilot Club
The Shiner Pilot Club made a request to the Shiner City Council to host the Alzheimer’s Walk at Spoetzl Brewery at the Sept. 9 meeting.
The Alzheimer’s Walk is slated for this Saturday, Oct. 5, beginning at 8:30 a.m. The walk will begin at the brewery, then continue to Welhausen Park in downtown Shiner, and end back at the brewery.
“I really encourage people to attend the walk,” Pilot Club member and Organizer Betty Petras said. “City Council was so appreciative of what we were doing, and they approved this event right away. If anyone has a family member or a friend that is actually suffering from Alzheimer’s, you can see what the process is that they go through. This walk and this donation will assist those suffering with Alzheimer’s.”
Folks are encouraged to wear purple.
“Some people can’t walk, or they don’t want to walk and that’s okay,” Petras said. “If you want to give a donation, you can make a check out to the Alzheimer’s Association. We ask that in the memo line, donors write the team’s name which is the Pilot Club of Shiner. Please mail checks to P.O. Box 1394, Shiner.”
The Shiner Police Department and the Shiner Emergency Management Services will also be in attendance.
Other items on the agenda include:
• The City of Shiner officially adopted the tax rate for the 2024-25 fiscal year. The tax rate is set at 25.10 cents per $100 of taxable property. This is the same rate as last year.
• Council approved a request from the Shiner Police Department to move a covered pavilion from Green Dickson Park to a new gun range location. The council also awarded a bid for a new concrete slab for a gun range.• Council received two bids for construction of the Fire Department building.
• The council appointed Jonathan Gluckman as the prosecuting attorney for the City of Shiner Municipal Court. This comes after the previous attorney passed away. Gluckman will start in March of next year.
