Jansky Sand and Gravel inducted into BBQ Cook-off Hall of Fame
The annual BBQ Cook-Off held each year during the Texas State Championship Fiddlers Frolics and since 2019 have been naming a cook-off team to its Hall of Fame.
This year, the Jansky Sand and Gravel team was selected as the Texas State Championship BBQ Cook-Off Hall of Fame.
The Jansky Sand and Gravel team, previously known as the Rollin’ Stones, started in 1996 with Donny and Gloria Horton thinking it would be fun for family and friends to cook at the Fiddlers Frolics.
The Horton’s asked their close and long-time friends, Mike and Peggy Jansky, to sponsor a team.
The Jansky’s agreed and in their first year of competing, Peggy received first place in beans and Donny was awarded 10th place in brisket.
From that moment on they were hooked and the annual tradition of competing in the BBQ contest at the Fiddlers’ Frolics had started for them.
Over the years, the team members consisted of friends and extended family, and now they couldn’t be prouder that the third generation of Janskys and Hortons continue with the tradition.
“One of our main team cooks says he looks forward to the Frolics more than Christmas,” Mike and Peggy Jansky said. “You definitely see many beers going down, cutting up, and lots of laughter, but don’t be fooled, we take this seriously and are here to win.”
Within the last 28 years, the team has placed in every category, though some years they didn’t place at all.
“It’s an honor and privilege to be recognized for doing what we love and being inducted into the 2024 Hall of Fame,” Mike and Peggy said. “We know Donny is smiling down on all of us today and couldn’t be prouder. We look forward to many more years to come and watch the next generation continue this team. This is much more than a cooking competition to us. It is a reunion of family and friends who put real life aside for three days of frolicking.”
Team members include:
1st generation – Mike and Peggy Jansky and Gloria Horton.
2nd generation – Rodney Horton, Kellee Horton, Jonathan Jansky, Scott Flesher, Clinton Jansky, Shelley Jansky, Gary Smith (family friend).
3rd generation – Owen Jansky, Chloe Jansky, Kaylee Jansky, Easton Flesher, Grayson Flesher, Tristin Horton, Carson Evans and Abigail Horton.
