Erwin Edward Dostalik

Erwin Edward Dostalik, 95, of Houston passed away Sunday, July 14, 2024 in Kindred Hospital Houston Northwest.
He was born Dec. 1, 1928 in Praha, to Louis J. and Della Novak Dostalik.
Erwin grew up on big farms picking cotton at home and for other people.  Erwin attended a Catholic school in Moulton, first-third grade and Oak Grove school fourth-eighth grade.
When his family moved from the Oak Grove farm to the new farm in Yoakum, in 1944 he rode a mule pulling a wagon with their belongings. In 1946 they moved to a house in the city of Yoakum.  He worked at Guadalupe Creamery 1947-1951 driving a delivery truck. He was drafted and served two years in the U.S. Army 1951 and 1952 during the Korean War. He was stationed in Camp Atterbury and then one  year in Germany.  While in the Army he was stationed with Johnnie Machicek from Hallettsville. They were so happy to be from nearby towns where they both grew up in Texas.
After the Army, Johnnie told him to come see his farm and meet his family.  Erwin met Johnnie’s sister, Agnes Frances Machicek and they were married Nov. 10, 1953 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Hallettsville.
After the marriage he went to welding school in Yoakum. They lived on two farms and then a house in the city of Yoakum. Then moved in 1961 to their present house in Houston and lived there for 63 years. His brother-in-law, Willie Machicek, helped with the move and worked with Erwin at Hurricane Steel. He was a great help while he lived with Erwin and Agnes. He helped with the kids and whatever was needed. Erwin worked at Hurricane Steel 1960-1975, Williams Machine Shop 1974-2006. He was a welder/machinist. He was a hard worker.
Erwin was the best loving, caring father, grandpa, great-grandpa, brother, uncle.  He loved his family when they were all gathered together.  He was always at home for his family. He could answer all of their questions. He loved that they were always close and nearby. He was very smart and knowledgeable, great wisdom. He enjoyed watching the Houston Astros, being outside with his garden, plants, trees.  He could grow anything. Planted many potatoes and onions. He donated many that he grew to the church bazaar. He loved picking pecans. If something was broke he could fix it. He did carpentry, built many things, and welded. Everyday he watched Mass on EWTN and Wheel of Fortune, Price Is Right and Family Feud.
He picked out an activity to keep him busy each day. He had a good memory, he could remember everything, enjoyed talking Czech and listening to polkas. He loved and always talked about the farm life. In 1973 and 1974 he was proud to drive his family of 10 in one car to Colorado.  He traveled to many states with his family.
After his wife passed away, he liked to cook and bake for his family. He made the best meat and potatoes, cinnamon rolls, peach cobbler. The family visited him everyday while he was in the hospital and nursing home.
