Shiner hosts Bloomington in district while St. Paul heads to Austin to face Brentwood Christian.
St. Paul at Brentwood Christian
St. Paul goes on the road for their penultimate non-district game at Austin Brentwood.
The Bears are 1-4 on the year, scoring 20.6 points a game and yielding 20.4 points a game.
They have lost four games by a total of 28 points and won their lone game by 29 points.
The Bears are averaging 286 yards on offense a game, 86.6 through the air and 199.4 yards on the ground.
Brayden Jennings leads the passing attack with 168 yards on 4-of-9 passing for two touchdowns, two interceptions.
Tabor Tyson leads the ground game with 749 rushing yards and five touchdowns. he is also the leading receiver with 196 yards and two touchdowns.
St. Paul head coach Jake Wachsmuth said the Cardinals defense needs to improve its gap integrity
“Against Geneva, we sometimes had two defenders in the same spot. Other times we did not fit the gap properly. The kids played hard; we just to make sure we are not in bad spots,” he said.
Ben Gatlin is the defensive leader with 42 tackles, 11 assists, four tackles for loss and Tyson has two interceptions.
On offense, St. Paul just needs to focus on the plays it runs well.
“In games where we are successful, we don’t run a lot of different plays. We need to get our power game going. If Brentwood shuts that down, that will open up counters and pass plays,” Wachsmuth said. “We need to stick to what works for us.”
Bloomington at Shiner
Comanches are back home for their district game against Bloomington.
The Wildcats (3-2, 0-1) have been on the rise the last couple of seasons.
They are scoring 26 points a game and yielding 27.2 points. The ‘Cats won three of four non-district games and lost 55-0 in the district opener to Refugio.
“They have been playing some really good football lately,” Comanches head coach Daniel Boedeker said. “
Shiner has four straight after losing to Hallettsville in the season opener and won their first district game against Ganado 50-12.
Quarterback Samuel Baraza has completed 63-of-150 passes for 814 yards, 12 touchdowns and four interceptions in the spread offense.
Jesus Zuniga is the leading rusher with 515 yards and and all of Bloomington’s seven rushing touchdowns.
Receiver Martin Cantu had 16 catches for 281 yards and three touchdowns; Cebron Taylor has 191 yards receiving and four touchdowns.
“They run their offense at a fast pace. Baraza throws it well; Zuniga is their primarily ball carrier,” Boedeker said. “They have several good receivers. We will see lots of run-pass option and we will need to mix up our defense.”
Bloomington comes out in a 4-3 on defense but has also run spread defense.
“They will mix it up well and our lineman will need to communicate well,” Boedeker said.
Jean Perez is the leading tackler with 23 tackles, 20 assists and three tackles for loss; Cameron Davis has 17 tackles, 11 assists and four tackles for loss.
