Lady Bulldogs put up valiant effort against Columbus
The Yoakum High School (YHS) Yoakum Volleyball Team battled Columbus but came up short.
The Lady Cardinals took the first set very stoutly at 25-11 before having to work harder in winning sets two and three, 25-19, 25-18.
“We did good things tonight. Columbus has a very good volleyball program although they lost a lot from last year. They have some new players but have some big hitters. We really cannot replicate that, and their tempo and power in practice,” Lady Bulldogs head coach Kayla Natho said. “I thought we had some amazing plays and good digs. A lot of things we need to work on.”
“We have some injuries but once those get cleared up, hopefully, we will be a different team.”
Taylor Morrow had a couple of kills and a block as Columbus scored nine of the first 12 points of the first game.
Amori Harper had a kill and Madie Svec added a couple of more for the Lady ‘Dogs but Columbus outscored Yoakum 16-8 for victory in the set.
In the second game, Harper had a block, Samantha Adamek got a kill with Lilly Fojt adding a kill and ace to put Yoakum up 8-6 after 14 points.
Down just 10-9, Columbus went on an 8-3 run; Yoakum cut the gap by outscoring the Lady Cardinals 5-3. Columbus ended the set with a 51 run with kills from Harper Gerik and Gracie Schoebel and a Gerik ace.
In the third game, Columbus a 4-3 lead after seven points and later went up 14-7; Yoakum then outscored them 9-2 with plays from Fojt, Svec and Harper.
Columbus then outscored the Lady Bulldogs 9-2 the rest of the game to finish things up.

St. Joseph School played against Victoria Home School Sept. 26 and won 25-17, 25-9.
