St. Paul football: Cards shut down Bears 44-0

    Five different players for St. Paul scored a rushing touchdown, Jacob Wachsmuth had a touchdown pass to Trent Brown and the Cardinals played intense defense in a 44-0 win at Austin Brentwood Christian on Friday.
    St. Paul held Brentwood to 116 yards of offense, six first downs and forced two turnovers.
    Sam Perez led the ground game with 148 yards on 16 carries.
    The Cardinals (3-3) opened scoring with 4:07 left in the first on an 8-yard run by Zane Barta and he also had the two-point conversion. 
    Wachsmuth threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Brown and repeated for the extra point to give St. Paul a 16-0 lead in the second quarter, which the Cards would hold at halftime.
    In the third frame, Brayden Slaughter scored on a 5-yard run and Perez had a 77-yard scoring run. Nathan Timmons added the point after on Slaughter’s score and Wachsmuth hit Brown for two on Perez’s score.
    In the fourth quarter, Matthew Wagner had a 20-yard touchdown run with the point after no good and Zeke Rodriguez scored on a 3-yard run with 37 seconds left in the game. Trent Brown tacked on the point after.
    The Cardinals will host former district opponent San Antonio Holy Cross this week to close out non-district.
