YHS Lady Bulldog Volleyball Team splits home tri-match

The Yoakum High School (YHS) Lady Bulldogs split a trimatch at home to Gonzales and Shiner on Aug. 13.

The Lady Bulldogs swept Gonzales and then finished with a five-set loss to the Shiner Lady Comanches.

“We did some good things as we still learning how to play together,” Yoakum head coach Kayla Natho said. “Our setterhitter connection will get better with more repetion. I think we served well. We had too many unforced errors and once we learn to control those, we will be fine.”

SHINER 3, YOAKUM 2

The Lady Bulldog match against Shiner went the full five sets with Shiner taking a 3-2 (24-26, 25-17, 25-17, 23-25, 15-11) win.

Yoakum started strong out of the gates with 11 off the first 14 points in the first set with plays from Samantha Adamek, a kill from Lilly Fojt and a Deveah Rios ace.

Shiner got within 15-11 as Kylynn Ramirez got two aces and Chesney Machacek put down a kill.

The Lady Comanches eventually tied things up at 18-18 with help from kills by Callie Sevcik and Brinley Ramirez.

The Lady Bulldogs then took a 22-20 lead and later scored two straight points from a 24-24 tie to win set one.

In the second game, Shiner went on a 6-1 run from 4-4 for a 10-5 lead.

Yoakum battled to get within two, 10-8, before Shiner scored nine of the next 12 points and each team scored six points a piece for a 25-17 Shiner win and a tie match after two games.

In set number three, Olivia Fojt hit three straight aces to get Yoakum within 17-12 after Shiner led 17-9 after 26 points.

Shiner then went on an minor 8-5 run to go up 2-1 in the match with another 25-17 win.

In the fourth game, Yoakum trailed 12-7 after 19 points before going on a 8-2 run to take a 15-14 lead.

From 15-15, Yoakum scored six of the next nine points for a threepoint lead before Shiner tied the set at 22-22 and Yoakum wrapped up things up with a 3-1 run.

In the tiebreaker game, Muenich had an ace as Yoakum scored the first three points before the Lady Comanches came back with an 8-6 lead.

The Lady Bulldogs drew even at 8-8 with a Harper kill but never led again as Shiner scored seven of the 10 points to take set number five.

YOAKUM 3, GONZALES 0

Yoakum played Gonzales in the first match of the day, with the Lady Bulldogs taking a 25-16, 25-12, 25-13 sweep.

In the opening set, Madie Svec got a kill with the help of Leah Muenich, including one ace, propelled Yoakum to an 10-3 lead after 13 points.

Gonzales pulled a few points back and the Lady Bulldogs returned to a seven-point advantage, 15-8, following a couple of kills by Lilly Fojt and Amori Harper.

The Lady Apaches eventually got within five, 17-12, before the Lady Bulldogs scored eight of the next 12 to finish the first game.

In the second set, Muenich and Rios each had an ace while Adamek added a kill to put Yoakum ahead 5-1 after the first six points. Yoakum extended the lead to 11-3 after Olivia Fojt converted three aces.

Later in the set, Yoakum held a 20-11 lead and went on a 5-1 run with two aces from Rios and kills from Svec and Lilly Fojt to capture the set.

In the third game, Yoakum was up 9-2 after 11 points with plays from Harper and Rios, and two aces from Muenich. Gonzales never was able to mount as serious threat as Svec got a kill to finish the set 25-13 and the match.
