YHS Volleyball finishes in second place in Bronze bracket in recent tournament

The Lady Bulldogs won five of eight matches and got Bronze runner up in the Schulenburg Bracket tournament.

BRONZE BRACKET PLAY

The Lady ‘Dogs opened bracket play with a 25- 18 and 25-21 sweep over Malakoff Cross Roads on Saturday.

Yoakum took on Weimar in the Bronze Championship with the Lady Wildcats taking a 25-21 and 25-20 win. Tournament Aug. 22-24.

THURSDAY POOL C PLAY

Yoakum went 1-2 in pool C play on Thursday to take third place.

FLATONIA 2, YOAKUM 1

Yoakum opened with Flatonia, falling to the Lady Bulldogs of Fayette County 25-20, 17-25, 25-23.

Flatonia led 15-11 after 26 points in the opening game and expanded that lead to 23-14.

Yoakum went on a 6-1 run to close the gap before Flatonia got the set winner.

After close proceedings early in set number two, Yoakum gained a 14-10 lead behind a Deveah Rios’s kill and two from Samantha Adamek as well as a block from Adamek for a 16-11 lead.

Rios had some aces to give Yoakum a 21-12 advantage and they held on for the win despite Flatonia scoring five of the last nine points of the set.

In the third game, Yoakum made plays from all over the court to set up 15-10 lead.

Flatonia got within 17-16.

Yoakum then scored three straight for a 20-16 lead before Flatonia went on a 9-3 run to end the set and the match.

YOAKUM 2, RICE CONSOLIDATED 0

Yoakum rebounded to defeat Rice Consolidated 25-21, 25-18.

In the first game, the Lady Raiders gained the upper hand by taking an 13-7 lead after the first 20 points.

With a 14-8 deficit, Yoakum scored 11 straight points, mainly on five Leah Muenich aces and two Madie Svec kills.

The teams then split four points as Rice stopped the Yoakum momentum and the Lady Bulldogs took the set in the end by four points.

The Lady ‘Dogs then won the second game 25-18.

GOLIAD 2, YOAKUM 0

The Lady ‘Dogs concluded Pool C play with a 25-13, 25-14 loss to Goliad.

FRIDAY POOL G PLAY

The Lady ‘Dogs won all three of their Pool G matches on Friday against Wallis Brazos, Gonzales and Shiner to capture first place.

YOAKUM 2, WALLIS BRAZOS 1

The Lady Bulldogs started off Pool G with a 19-25, 25-28, 25-17 win against Wallis Brazos.

Brazos scored the first four points of the first set and took a 7-2 lead. The service of Taylor Velek and a kill by Brianna Lopez got Yoakum within 7-5 but then Brazos started a 7-1 run to lead 14-6.

The Lady ‘Dogs fought to get within 20-18 with a Lilly Fojt ace and a couple of kills by Brynlee McCoy.

Brazos then scored five of six points to take the first game.

Yoakum got an ace from Lilly Fojt and one from Muenich to scored five of the first seven points of the second set. The Lady Cougars came back with a 7-2 run and Yoakum forced a 9-9 tie as Lily Fojt put down two kills.

Yoakum was later down 14-13 before outscoring Brazos 7-3 with a Velek ace, and kills by Adamek and Svec.

Svec and McCoy got a kill each to provide the last two points of the set in a 5-1 run by the Lady ‘Dogs.

The third game went back and forth for most of the way until a 9-1 run from 16-16 gave Yoakum the set and the match win. Muenich got two aces, Lopez added two kills and Lilly Fojt added one during the run.

YOAKUM 2, GONZALES 0

The Lady ‘Dogs defeated Gonzales 25-11 and 25-13 later on Friday.

In the opener, the Lady ‘Dogs took a 9-3 lead with a McCoy kill, Lilly Fojt ace, Adamek block and a kill from Rios.

The Lady Apaches got within 10-7 and Yoakum replied with a 8-1 run with aces from McKenna New, Muenich and Olivia Fojt, a kill from Svec, and a block from Adamek.

From there, the Lady ‘Dogs scored seven of the next 11 points to close the set.

Lilly Fojt provided two aces and a kill, Adamek had one kill and Rios had a pair of kills as the Lady ‘Dogs opened the second game with nine of the first 13 points.

Yoakum scored eight straight points with help from an Olivia Fojt ace, and two kills each from Adamek and McCoy for a 19-7 lead.

Each team scored six points a piece from that point to give Yoakum the win; Velek got an ace and Amori Harper provided a block as highlights for the Lady ‘Dogs during the end of the set.

YOAKUM 2, SHINER 0

Yoakum defeated the Lady Comanches in two sets, 25-20 and 25-20.
