Globetrotter to speak at Back to School Party in Yoakum

Fresh Start Fellowship event offers free backpacks, food for youth

Former NBA player and Harlem Globetrotter Melvin Adams is teaming up with Fresh Start Fellowship for a Back to School Party with free backpacks, complimentary food and a speech from the basketball star on Aug 6.

Doors open at 322 Pat Cleburne Street at 4:30 p.m. The event begins at 5 p.m., and the first 50 kids will receive free backpacks; everybody in attendance will receive free nachos and drinks. Fresh Start Youth Pastor Chris Rangel said Adams was an ideal speaker to motivate local youth ahead of the 2022-2023 school year.

“He played with the San Antonio Spurs; he also played with the Harlem Globetrotters. He has an awesome story of the different obstacles he had to overcome in life,” said Rangel of Adams. “He had to overcome those to be something that he dreamed of being.”

Rangel said Adams provides a comedic and inspirational story with a faith-based narrative with a few basketball tricks. The event is free, and Fresh Start will provide rides to the event between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. for those who express interest by calling 361-243-1094.

Rangel has worked with organizations in Cuero and Houston since 2016 to provide similar back-to-school events and looked forward to hosting the party for Yoakum area youth. The event is a collaborated effort from Fresh Start Fellowship, Prodigal Son House Ministry and River of LIfe Church.

Kids will receive a number when they arrive that they will turn in the number for a backpack. They will be asked to write a prayer on the back of that piece of paper so the church staff can pray for them throughout the year. Rangel said the free backpacks would contain a youth Bible and encouraging notes.
