This year’s St. Paul High School delegates for American Legion Boys State and Girls State are Joseph Twyford and Ashlyn Pesek. Both students are exceptional examples of what Boys State and Girls State represent.

Shiner Library reports another great summer reading program

The 2022 Shiner Public Library summer reading program has come to a close. We had an exciting program complete with Monty the Magician, Bonzo Crunch, John O’Bryant and a very interesting science program with Jennifer Rawlings. Many books were read and many interesting and cute crafts were created.

Lavaca County Czech Heritage Society meets

Helen and Mike Technik explained the process of canning pickles at the July 10th Lavaca County Czech Heritage Society meeting.  The couple also presented this program at the June 25th Texas Czech Heritage Culture Center Family Day in La Grange.

AmeriCorps Seniors project to include Lavaca Co.

Victoria-based non-profit Meals on Wheels South Texas (MOWSTx) will expand its senior-serving mission to consist of eight counties including Lavaca County after receiving an AmeriCorps Seniors demonstration grant of $191,425.

Hallettsville fire uncovers old stagecoach inn

When a major fire hit the downtown area of Hallettsville, on Feb. 12, 1997, and totally destroyed what was known as the “Weingarten building,” it also consumed a structure that could be considered a precious historical asset belonging to the people of Hallettsville, Lavaca County, and Texas as well.

COLUMN: Do birds really do that?

Recently, I was doing some research for a story that I had intended to write about wildfires. However, I got very distracted by some items I found during the research process - items that were entirely off the wall - very bizarre, to say the least.
In addition to claiming the title of Chamber president this year, local teacher Anna Bartos also claimed the 2022 Distinguished Citizen Award from the Chamber of Commerce. She is pictured here at the American Legion Hall on the night of that awards ceremiony this past March. Incidentally, she and several other young ladies and gentlemen with be headed right back there again in just 2 1/2 weeks for the annual Miss & Mr. Moulton Pageant. Two new Scouts attain Eagle rank

Members of Shiner BSA Troop 231 celebrated the two newest Eagle Scouts in Shiner.  On April 30, 2022, an Eagle Court of Honor was held to honor Travis Oren Thibodeaux and John Dalton Patton achieving the rank of Eagle Scout.
