Area football: SP hosts Woodlands Legacy in Homecoming; Shiner visits East Bernard
St. Paul hosts Woodlands Legacy Prep for 2022 Homecoming and the first of two straight games.
Shiner starts at two-game road trip by taking on East Bernard in its final non-district game.
Woodlands Legacy Prep at St. Paul.
St. Paul is home for the first time since hosting Flatonia in the opening ame.
Woodlands Legacy is 2-1 on the year after opening with a loss to Northland Christian, and defeating Tomball Rosehill Christian and Spring Frassati Catholic. The Lions are averaging nearly 27 points a game and yielding just under 21 points a game.
The Cardinals are 1-2 after losses to Flatonia and Muenster Sacred Heart, and a win against TMI Episcopal. St. Paul is scoring 19.3 points per game and giving up 33.3 points a contest.
The Lions in the past have run their ground game out of the spread but are different this year with a flexbone- option offense led by Wyatt Francis (27-209, three touchdowns), David May (17-184) and Chase Carrico (12-184, one touchdown).
Francis has completed 11-of-21 passes on the year for 238 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. Ian McCrarAy is the top receiver with nine catches for 177 yards and one touchdown.
“We don’t see a lot of schools that run the option and it will be a challenge to make sure our defensive players understand their individual responsibilities,” Cardinals head coach Jake Wachsmuth said.
On the defensive side, Jed Sanders had 13 tackles and three assists to lead the defense.
“They have shown an odd front but will probably put eight in the box to stop our running game,” Wachsmuth said. “Our offense needs to correct fumbles and make sure we don’t get a lot of penalties. We just have to be better on both sides of the ball— we have to block better and tackle better.”
Shiner at East Bernard
The Comanches travel to East Bernard to take on the Brahmas. Shiner last played East Bernard in 2020, where the Comanches overcame seven turnovers to post a 13-7 win in overtime.
“They are a very physical football team. East Bernard has several good skilled kids in the offensive backfield,” Shiner head coach Daniel Boedeker said.
After a close loss to Hallettsville to open the season, Shiner has come back strong, blanking Industrial 47-0 and taking down Poth 22-21.
East Bernard has lost all three games this season to Ganado, Hitchcock and Edna.
The Brahmas have struggled to score points as they are averaging just over 16 points a game and are ceding 34 points a game.
East Bernard has total of 450 yards rushing in three games in their Slot-T offense, led by A. Henriguez who has 290 yards and two touchdowns. C. Fajkus has completed 13-of-25 passes for 205 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.
“They rotate several players in the backfield and will throw it out of the spread,” Boedeker said. “Our defense has to read keys and not get fooled by play-action passes.”
East Bernard runs the split on defense and is very sound.
“They have two good linebackers and the defense overall gets to the ball quickly,” he said. “On offense, we need to stay on our blocks, put together drives and have no turnovers.”
