Football: Shiner hosts Poth; St. Paul rematches with Muenster Sacred Heart at Catholic Bowl in Frisco
The Comanches will host Poth while the Cardinals head to North Texas to play Muenster Sacred Heart at a neutral venue.
Poth at Shiner
The Shiner Comanches (1-1) will host Poth for Homecoming 2022 to conclude a two-game home stand.
The Pirates have won their first two games, getting by Blanco 21-14 and blanking Falls City 41-0.
Poth is scoring 31 points a game and yielding a mere 7 points a game.
“It will be another challenging game as Poth returns several players that went four rounds deep,” Shiner head coach Daniel Boedeker said. “They are big on the defensive line and have solid linebackers.”
The Comanches fell in their opener at Hallettsville 14-7 but came roaring back to shut down Industrial 47-0 last week at home.
The Comanches won last year’s contest in Poth 39-10.
The Pirates are led by running back-linebacker Matthew Bunn (812 rushing yards, 12 touchdowns, 169 receiving yards, two touchdowns, 111 tackles, three interceptions) will be a key two-way player. Quarterback Zane Raabe (901 rushing yards, 14 touchdowns) played running back in 2021. The defense will be led by defensive backs Seth Drzymala (82 tackles, one interception), Gabriel Silansky (47 tackles, two interceptions) and Aidan DeHoyos (38 tackles, four interceptions).
Other key players are OL-DL Luke Rogers, OL-DL Rankin Ramzinski, OL-DL Adahir Ruiz, TE-DL Nathan Guevara, LB Carson Smolka and TE-LB Owen Wiatrek.
“We will need a good plan to stop Raabe as he is a dual threat quarterback. Rowan Macias and Matthew Bunn are solid running backs.”
The Comanches will also have to account for receivers Silansk and Dryzmala.
On offense, Shiner will look to build on from the Industrial game.
“We will have to take good angles and have good pad level to win the line of scrimmage,” Boedeker said.
St. Paul vs Muenster Sacred Heart (Frisco)
The Cardinals play Muenster Sacred Heart in a rematch of theTAPPS IV 2021 state final won by St. Paul 36-8.
The two teams will play as part of the Catholic Bowl on Saturday at 9 p.m. at The Star, the training facillity for the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys.
St. Paul head coach Jake Wachsmuth said the Cardinals will practice four days this week (Monday through Thursday), will travel to the DFW on Friday and attend a dinner as part of the Catholic Bowl events Friday night.
They will have a workout on Saturday morning before playing the Tigers at night.
Sacred Heart is 2-0 on the season, beating Petrolia 34-14 and Era 50-30.
The Cardinals (1-1) got their first win last week, 38-35 at TMI after losing their opener to Flatonia.
The Sacred Heart offense will led by linemen Eli Hess, Trey Thibodeaux and Weslee Sprouse who will provide holes for running back-defensive back Nathan Hesse (800 rushing yards, eight touchdowns, 78 tackles) and Ryan Swirczynski (1,171 yards rushing, 16 touchdowns) who could play quarterback or running back; wide receiver-defensive back Gus Ganzon will contribute on both sides.
“Ryan Swirczynski is a good athlete,” Wachsmuth said. “Our defense will need to key on him and pursue the ball well as a team. Before the game, we will need to learn what plays they like to run and work to stop them.”
In their game at TMI last week, the Cardinals offense had two turnovers in the first half but only one in the second half.
“The kids cut out mistakes in the second half and we need to continue to improve on eliminating turnovers and other mistakes. I expect Sacred Heart to key on our run game; TMI did not do that. I feel Sacred Heart looking to contain our running game will open up our passing game,” Wachsmuth said.
