St. Paul football: Cardinals come from behind against SH to win district opener

    Trailing Sacred Heart 24-22 with less than five minutes left in the game, St. Paul scored 16 points to overtake the Indians and win the district oopner 38-24 on Friday.
    Zane Barta scored on a 5-yard run with 4:51 mark to put the Cardinals ahead 30-24 after he also scored the two-point play. Less than four minutes later, Sam Perez scored on a 10-yard run and had the two-point conversion for a 38-24 lead with 57 seconds left.
    St. Paul had a better day on offense with over 400 yards rushing led by Barta who ran for 200 yards and Perez with 107 yards. 
    The Cardinals also did better on defense, yielding 24 points, 17 less than their Oct. 7 game against SA Holy Cross.
    Sacred Heart struck twice in the first frame — a 10-yard run by Brady Haas three minutes in and Nic Angerstein's 20-yard field goal with 55 seconds left.
    St. Paul got within 10-8 on a 9-yard run from Perez with 6:36 left in the second and a successful two-point play, also by Perez. 
    Cardinals took a 14-10 lead with Trent Brown's 24-yard run at the 2:26 mark of the second frame. St. Paul increased their lead to 22-10 oon a 36-yard run and two-point play by Barta with 2:59 left in the third quarter. 
    The Indians countered with a 2-yard run by Haas and two-point play by Cole Duty to get within 22-18 late in the third frame and retook the lead with a 27-yard pass from Duty to Andrew Steffek, with the two-point play failing, eight seconds into the fourth quarter.
