Sweet Home ISD donates to Sweety Home firemen

The Sweet Home School surprised local firefighters with a $2,000 donation to the Sweet Home Volunteer Fire Department. Students raised the funds by participating in a penny war fundraiser back in the fall.
Friends and family members of Sweet Home’s Ben “Bird” Kopecky gathered recently at Sweet Home VFD Fire House to present the department with the dollars their benefit, “Bird’s Booze Wagon,” helped raise for local firemen this year. The amount came to $6,465.

What started as a way for one man’s family to offset medical costs as he fought the good fight against lung cancer has since become a way for the family to give back to the community that loved and supported them in their time of need.

Shiner Quilt Guild donates to Shiner FUMC

The Shiner Heritage Quilt Guild presented a donation of $1,000 to First United Methodist Church of Shiner in grateful appreciation for the use of the Fellowship Hall and Activity Center for meetings and the 2022 “Spring into Quilting” show.

Towards the end of the Civil War, there were some men in Texas and throughout the South who had given up on the Confederate cause. They were homesick and tired of fighting; some who had been on furlough simply refused to return to their units.

Shiner Library reports another great summer reading program

The 2022 Shiner Public Library summer reading program has come to a close. We had an exciting program complete with Monty the Magician, Bonzo Crunch, John O’Bryant and a very interesting science program with Jennifer Rawlings. Many books were read and many interesting and cute crafts were created.

Lavaca County Czech Heritage Society meets

Helen and Mike Technik explained the process of canning pickles at the July 10th Lavaca County Czech Heritage Society meeting.  The couple also presented this program at the June 25th Texas Czech Heritage Culture Center Family Day in La Grange.
