St. Paul volleyball: St. Paul earns six wins at Schulenburg

    The Lady Cardinals varsity volleyball team won six of eight matches and won their bracket at the Schulenburg tournament, and lost in three at New Braunfels Thunder in last week’s action.

    Thursday pool play
    The Lady Cardinals won one match and lost two in Pool B play Thursday.
    Edna 2, St. Paul 1
    The Lady Cardinals opened the tournament with a three-set loss to 3A Edna (25-19, 24-26, 25-18) on Thursday morning.
    Kills by Skylar Mozisek and Annabelle Collins helped the Lady Cardinals score six of the opening nine points.  St. Paul later went ahead 11-6 on the back of a Collins ace, and Mozisek and Emery Kennedy kills. The Cowgirls then went on a 10-0 run to take a 16-11 lead.
    Plays from Mozisek and Ashlin DeSarro allowed the Lady Cards to get within 21-18. Edna then went on a 4-1 run to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
    In the second game, St. Paul recorded 10 of the first 16 points. The Cowgirls came back to within 12-10 and then outscored the Lady Cards slightly 3-1 for a 13-13 tie.
    The set proceeded with 14-14, 16-16 and 17-17 ties. St. Paul then scored three straight points, partly on a DeSarro block and Collins ace.
    The Cowgirls responded with a 4-1 run with an ace by Avery Garcia and kill by Kerrigan Rodas.
    The score went back and forth until the Lady Cards went on a 2-0 run from 24-24 with Kennedy getting the set-two kill to knot the match at 1-1.
    In the third game, Edna took a 10-4 lead after 14 points. The Lady Cards eventually got to within 12-8 with a couple of Kennedy kills.  Edna scored five of the next seven points.
    From a 22-17 advantage, Edna closed out the set and the match by outscoring St. Paul 3-1.
    Sc’burg 2, St. Paul 1
    In the third set against the host Lady Shorthorns, St. Paul was within set and match point to take a win but a rally by Schulenburg dealt St. Paul a 2-1 loss (25-20, 22-25, 26-24) in their second pool match.
    To begin the third game, Mozisek hit a couple of aces and the Lady Cards led 3-1 after four points. The Lady ‘Horns outscored them 5-2 for a 6-5 lead.
    The Lady Cards used a Collins kill and a couple of DeSarro blocks for an 8-6 lead. Schulenburg then went on a 10-1 run with an ace by Greenli Van Zandt and a kill by Kimber Bartosch. St. Paul rallied for a 19-19 deadlock and then scored five of the next six points.
    The Lady ‘Horns rallied to take the set and match with a 6-0 run.
    Schulenburg opened the match with nine of 11 points.  The Lady Cards countered with a 7-2 run to close the gap to 11-9.
    After a 15-15 tie, Schulenburg never trailed, going on a 10-5 run to lead 1-0 in the match.
    In the second game, Kennedy produced two kills and Tatum Walker contributed an ace as St. Paul scored seven of the first 10. At several points, the Lady ‘Horns closed down to one point.
    With a 19-17 advantage, St. Paul held a slight 4-3 points advantage as Mozisek and Addy Matias made some plays before St. Paul took the game 25-22.
    SP 2, Fayetteville 1
    The Lady Cards once again went three sets as they closed out the day against Fayetteville but took a 25-14, 17-25, 25-20 win to wrap up the first day on a good note.
    The teams split the first six points; kills by DeSarro, Kennedy and Reese Chilek, along with two Mozisek aces, helped St. Paul take a 16-8 margin before sealing up the game by outscoring the Lady Lions 9-6 with Hayden Rother adding a pair of aces.  
    In the second game, St. Paul scored the first three points and Fayetteville came back with an 11-4 scoring run.
    The Lady Cardinals eventually got within 13-12 with help from kills by Matias and Mozisek.
    Fayetteville went on a 12-4 run to take the set and tie the match at 1-1.
    Lady Cards go unbeaten in Friday pool play
    St. Paul played three and won three in Friday’s Pool G play including a win over district rival Sacred Heart.
    St. Paul 2, Marion 0
    The Lady Cardinals opened  play with a 25-23, 25-23 sweep of Marion in the morning.
    St. Paul 2, Snook 0
    St. Paul took down the Snook Lady Bluejays in two sets in the afternoon, 25-16 and 25-12.
    Snook opened the match with four straight points and a 6-1 lead after seven points with Kalyn Cooper putting down two aces.
    The Lady Cards then went on 7-1 run on a kill by DeSarro, and serves and ace from Tatum Walker.
    From an 8-8 tie, St. Paul went on a 9-3 run with one ace from Collins, and one from Hayden Rother along with a DeSarro kill.
    Mozisek and Kennedy contributed kills to put St. Paul ahead 19-13; the Lady Cards wrapped up the game with six of the next nine points, including a DeSarro kill and Walker ace.
    In the second set, Kennedy and Chilek provided some kills for a 7-3 Lady Cards advantage after 10 points. Snook closed the gap to two at 10-8 and St. Paul went on a 5-0 run with Kennedy scoring three of those points on two blocks and a kill.
    Matias and DeSarro booked plays to give St. Paul 20-10 lead and the Lady Cards outscored Snook 5-2 to finish the set and the match.
    St. Paul 2, SH 0
    The Lady Cards closed out the day with pre-district match against the Indianettes, taking a 25-17 and 25-19 win.
    In the initial set, Mozisek produced trouble for Sacred Heart with her serves with McKinley Jacobs and Chilek getting a kill, and Kennedy scoring on a block for a 7-1 Lady Cards lead after eight points.
    The Indianettes  then scored eight of the next 10 points to grab a small lead. St. Paul came back for a 14-12 lead with a Walker ace and Collins kill along the way.  Sacred Heart rallied for a 16-14 lead before St. Paul went on a 9-3 run that included three aces by Matias, and a kill by Jacobs and Mozisek for the set win.
    The second game commenced with the teams sharing the first 20 points and St. Paul went ahead 15-13. The Lady Cards then saw the set and the match off with a 10-6 scoring run.
    The squads spit the opening 16 points of the third set before St. Paul went on a 4-2 run with two kills by Jacobs and a Matias ace. 
    The Lady Lions took a 16-15 lead but an 8-0 run, with kills by Matias, DeSarro and Chilek, eventually led to St. Paul winning the game 25-20 to take the match.
    Saturday bracket play
    St. Paul beat Fayetteville in three sets, 12-25, 25-16, 25-18 to start off bracket play. 
    The Lady Cardinals then swept Nixon 25-16 and 25-19 to claim the Bronze bracket championship.
    NB Thunder 3, SP 0
    The Lady Cardinals fell in a road game against New Braunfels Thunder on Aug. 18, 25-20, 25-16, 25-13.
