Shiner, St. Paul football: Comanches open with Cobras; SP travels to Austin

The Cards play the second of two road games while Shiner opens the season this week

The Comanches kick off the 2026 season at home to Industrial; kickoff time is slated for 7:30 pm.
The Cobras were 3-8 (3-3) and made the playoffs in 2025. 
They return 24 lettermen, six offensive and five defensive starters.
“We expect this year’s Industrial team to be very similar to last year’s team,” Shiner head coach Daniel Boedeker said. “They will have a size advantage over us and our technique will be key for us.”
Lineman Archer Burnett will provide a starting point for both lines. 
Wide receiver/defensive back Bryce Sykes (213 receiving yards; one interception) and quarterback Cooper Francis (313 passing yards) will be the main offensive weapons. Industrial will rely on a stout running attack and the play-action pass.
“We have to make a lot of stops on defense,” Boedeker said.
Linebacker Mason Hunt (68 tackles) will be the key Cobra on the defensive side.
The Cobras are picked to place third in 14-3ADII, behind favorites Tidehaven and East Bernard, and above Wallis Brazos
Last season, the Comanches edged Industrial with a 27-21 in overtime.
St. Paul at Austin St. Andrews Episcopal
The Cardinals play their second game of the year at Austin St. Andrews Episcopal 
The Highlanders opened with a 41-20 win at San Antonio Christian on Friday.
Hayes Paddock led the offense with 110 rushing yards and three touchdowns.
Charlie Greenburg was 7-of-9 passing for 130 yards and ran for two touchdowns as well. Jack Dial had 12 total tackles to pace the defense. 
St. Paul led Victoria St. Joseph 12-0 at halftime last week, only for the Flyers to rally in the second half for a 21-12 win.
“One thing we noticed about Austin St. Andrew is they made a lot of big plays in their opening game,” St. Paul head coach Jake Wachsmuth said. “They returned a punt for a touchdown, had a bug interception and made plays on offense.”
The Cardinals defense will need to prevent big plays from the Highlanders, whether from the ground or the air.
“We have to stop the run,” he said. “They can make some plays through the air after they get their ground game going.”
The Highlander defense comes out in an odd front/3-4 look.
Wachsmuth said against St. Joseph, St. Paul’s offense did a lot of good things but also had some plays that went in the wrong direction
“Our offense will need to eliminate negative-yard plays,” he said.
Shiner shows improvement in Schulenburg scrimmage
The Shiner football team played its second and final scrimmage at Schulenburg on Thursday.
Daniel Boedeker said Shiner showed improvement from the first scrimmage on both sides of the football.
“Our defense started out very well and when we were on offense, we were able to put some plays together to move the ball.” We did a lot of good things on both sides of the football. 
The Comanches did have a few penalties on offense that will need to be corrected heading into the season.
“We need to cut out those penalties to avoid having negative plays,” Boedeker said.
