The Cardinals and Comanches both close out the regular season this week. St. Paul hosts Westbury Christian while the Comanches travel to Kenedy.
Westbury Christian at St. Paul
The Wildcats are 1-8 and 0-4 in district play.
Westbury Christian is scoring around 11.4 points per game and allowing 33.8 points per game.
“They have been struggling but they do have have lots of ability, especially on the offensive side,” Cardinals head coach Jake Wachsmuth said. “If we are not careful, their speed can be an issue.”
The Wildcats run the spread on offense, led by quarterback Jackson Carr and running back Drake Ceasar. Alex Fetter is a threat as a returner.
“Their offense will mostly run through Carr so we have to pressure him and contain him,” Wachsmuth said.
The Cardinals did well rushing the ball last week against Rosehill Christian.
“We did make a couple of mistakes. We have to clean those up and avoid negative plays. We need to build off what we did Friday night,” Wachsmuth said.
The win against Rosehill Christian has mostly solidified St. Paul as second place in the district and they are set to play in the first round of the playoffs at home Nov. 6
Shiner at Kenedy
The Comanches (9-0, 5-0) play on the road against a stout Lions team.
“They are a talented team that has dealt with some injuries and some of those players have recovered,” Shiner head coach Daniel Boedeker said.
Kenedy is balanced on offense with 213.8 passing yards a game and 199.1 rushing yards a game for 412.9 total yards a game. The Lions score 40.25 points a game.
“Kenedy has a lot of weapons on offense,” Boedeker said. “They run out of the spread but will get under center and do some power running.”
Quarterback Jericho Jackson had completed 115-of-166 passes for 1,710 yards, 20 touchdowns and five interceptions.
His top targets are Dylan Russell (37-642, six touchdowns) and Dehlay Salas (26-523, eight touchdowns).
The Kenedy ground game is led by Ruben Solis who has 907 yards on 170 carries and 12 touchdowns.
“Jackson is a dual-threat quarterback and we have seen on film that Logan White can also make plays for them,” Boedeker said. “We will need to be solid on defense.”
Defensively, the Lions give up 27.1 points per game.
Anthony Perez is the leader with 66 total tackles, 20 solo tackles and  46 assists.
Sala has two interceptions and David Cantu has three fumble recoveries.
“Kenedy will mix it up some; they do like to base out of the 50 front,” Boedeker said. “It will be crucial for our linemen to communicate well and have the right blocking scheme called.”
Shiner will have their bye on Nov. 6.
