Rainfall in March reached 4.62 inches with several good downpours hitting the area. Rain fell on eight days led by 2.43 inches on the 21st. For the year Hallettsville has received 17.55 inches which is 7.68 inches above normal.

Oh No... Hail

Last Friday’s severe thunderstorm dropped hail measuring up to 2.1 inches in and around Hallettsville. The storm cut a path through a good stretch of the county, dropping hail from pea-size up to the afore mentioned big stuff.

January rains proved One for the record

January 2024 went into the record books as the wettest ever with a rainfall total of 10.90 inches. The amount surpassed the previous record of 8.33 inches set in 1934. Single-day records of 3.88 inches on the 22nd and 3.92 inches on the 24th helped bolster the month’s total.

In point of fact, this land along FM 2314 is normally home to a hayfield rather than the roadside waterfront it became Monday, when more than 9 inches of rain fell over the weekend. In so doing, it set the bar for the rainiest January on record, NWS observer Larry Rothbauer reported, with 10.90 inches recorded for the month.

Heavy rains soak county

A steady stream of moisture caused by a frontal lift and instability provided the fuel for heavy rains last week, sending local totals to better than a foot at the airport and areas surrounding Shiner. Hallettsville reset the all-time January record at 10.90 inches.

In addition, to approximately four-plus inches of rain the area received on Tuesday, May 9, an additional another approximate four inches fell Saturday, May 13 causing extensive flooding in low water crossings on county roads.
Call it an inch and five 10ths of blessings that fell on a few in Lavaca County this week, as late June storm clouds remain in the forecast for at least another day or two. Here's hoping everyone sees their share of the wet stuff...

Rains a welcome sight in county

This week's rains were a welcome sight for many in Lavaca County, who hadn't seen a measureable rain of any substance for much of 2022. Much of what fell, unfortunately, came sudden and hard with extremely high winds and fierce lightning. If at all, in some places.
