Shiner scores late to down Wildcats; squashes Hornets

The overall and district streak for the Comanche baseball team continued last week with home victories against Louise and Weimar.

SHINER 21, LOUISE 0

Shiner battered Louise 21-0 April 12 at Green-Dickson Park.

The No. 1 Comanches only put their eyes and attention to the next game they are about to play. “We always tell the players to take it one game at a time. It is about being prepared to play each game and doing our best,” Shiner head coach Daniel Boedeker said. “We have a lot of good players on this team that take it seriously. They work very well as a team but know they have to be focused every single time they step on the field.”

All but one batter got a hit in the bottom of the first inning and Shiner finished with 20 total hits. Carson Schuette and Drew Wenske each got four hits while Ryan Peterson scored four runs.

“We did a real good job at the plate. We got a lot of base hits in that first inning; hitting is contagious with the top of the order starts hitting and hitting occurs all the way through the lineup,” Boedeker said.

AJ Patek got the start and the win with relief pitching by Schuette and Wenske.

“AJ has pitched five or six games so far and is one of those guys in our bullpen that is working a lot,” Boedeker said. “He has got some good stuff and we wanted to get him a look at some live hitters. He has thrown in practice and it was time to get him into a game.”

Louise managed two hits at the start but Patek and the defense kept a run from scoring. The cascade of firstinning Shiner hits, along with a couple of walks and hit by pitch, allowed Shiner to score 10 runs.

The Hornets got a leadoff walk in the second before first baseman Ryan Peterson caught a line out and quickly threw to Wenske at shortstop for a double play.

The story in the bottom of the second was the same as the first inning — the Comanches got 10 more hits and scored 11 walks with some more walks and batters hit sprinkled in.

Schuette pitched the third inning, allowing no hits and one base runner on an error. In the bottom of the inning, Landon Watson, Jake Davidson, Hunter Knight and Eli Fric got a plate appearance and Schuette got a hit.

In the top of the fourth, Wenske went on the mound and Shiner made some other defensive changes with Watson going to first, Caden Chrismon went to left field, Hunter Nevlud taking over at right field, Davidson going to third, Knight going to second and Fric taking a trip to center field. Wenske got three straight strikeouts to conclude the game. SHINER 7, WEIMAR 5

The Comanches got up 5-0 against Weimar, only to see the Wildcats rally to tie the game and the Comanches found a way to win with two runs scored in the top of the sixth.

“We had a battle on our hands. We knew Weimar was going to come out here and compete,” Boedeker said. “They took advantage of a couple of things we gave but they also hit the ball. Proud of how our kids came back to win in the end, getting people on base and getting the RBIs when we needed them.”

Peterson started at pitcher and went five innings with five runs on five hits, four walks and tallied a dozen strikeouts. Wenske came on in the sixth inning to pitch the last two innings with one walk and three strikeouts to get the win.

“Drew came in and did good throwing strikes. That is what he does for us,” Boedeker said. “Drew has been consistent all year. Ryan got his pitch count high and we felt comfortable having Drew come in and close.”

Wenske got two hits, double and one RBI; Peterson had a big three-run double in the second.

“Ryan got a big hit in the second inning and that played a big factor in the game. At the end, Drew got on base and was able to score

In the pivotal bottom of the sixth, Wenske singled and eventually got to third on stolen bases; AJ Patek was intentionally walked with two outs, Bryce Nerada reached on an error, allowing Wenske and Patek to both score. Wenske then went to get strikeout out the first two batters in the top of the seventh to help Shiner get out of the inning and the game.

Nerada and Bryce Filip got backto- back hits to start the bottom of the second. Kaidan Boothe got a oneout walk and Peterson scored runner Hunter Knight, Filip and Boothe with a double. His runner Caden Chrismon scored on Wenske’s RBI double.

The Comanches went ahead 5-0 in the third as Patek was walked, moved to second on Nerada’s sacrifice and scored on Carson Schuette’s triple.
