Thrift shop uses funds to save locals money on vet bills
CUERO- A local non-profit organization manages a resale store and donates proceeds to provide local pet owners with drastically discounted spay, neuter, and micro-chipping services.
Spay Neuter Your Pet DeWitt County (SNYPD) is a Cuero-based operation that has distributed over 1,000 vouchers to provide pet owners with affordable spay and neuter services for their pets since 2019. The spay and neuter vouchers decrease the charge of services for dogs to $35 and cats to $25; microchipping services through SNYPD’s program cost only $15.
The organization relies on clothing donations to fund the used-clothing store located in their warehouse at 904 West Heaton St. in Cuero.
“We saw the need to help pet adoptions by reducing the pet population,” said SNYPD President Crystal Irvin. “We thought, what better way than to have a voucher program at low cost (to) spay and neuter (local cats and dogs).”
SNYPD provides shoppers a fiscally responsible donation opportunity by pricing all adult clothes at $1 and children’s clothes at three for $1. Donors can drop off clothing contributions in the green recycling receptacle outside their warehouse; donations are preferred in plastic bags to protect the clothing from rain and save space.
The resale clothing shop is typically open the first full weekend of each month on Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. until early afternoon. Vouchers can be picked up upon request each Tuesday or delivered by one of the organization’s volunteers.
“Because it’s Spay Neuter Your Pet DeWitt County, I think a lot of people in Yoakum don’t realize that Yoakum qualifies because Yoakum is split between DeWitt and Lavaca (Counties),” said SNYPD Board Member Lisa Fowler. “We’ve had Yoakum people come, and they say, ‘I don’t (live on the DeWitt County side of) Yoakum.’ But it’s okay if you’re from Yoakum.”
The spay and neuter vouchers are honored by Dr. Koby Reitz of the Cuero Vet Clinic and Dr. Robert Beer of the DeWitt Vet Clinic. The vouchers can save pet owners more than $100 on a single procedure depending on the animal’s weight and the service required.
