Shiner class of 2022 cross country and track athlete Jocelyn Moreno will continue to competitively run come a couple of months.
Moreno recently signed with McMurry University in Abilene to participate in both sports.
She was very grateful to the Shiner ISD coaches who have helped her become a solid runner.
“It is a blessing to be able to run cross country and track at the college level,” Moreno said. “I am thankful for the coach at McMurry; thankful for the coaches here at Shiner who have taught me so much, things I will take with me to my college career.”
Moreno’s opportunity started to materialize in April of last year.
“McMurry head XC/assistant track coach Rexi Purcells reached out to Coach (Michelle) Winkenwerder at the regional track meet in 2021,” Moreno said. “She watched me run at the state cross-country meet in November and we started talking.”
“I took a campus visit shortly afterwards and really loved the place.
Moreno ran the mile and two-mile in high school track, and is slated to do the same events for McMurry University when track starts.
“I will still be new to the whole college sports next school year but I know my coach will have a good plan for me and God will have a good plan for,” she said. “I am going to try to push my and do the best I can, and set the bar pretty high.”
War Hawk sports team compete in the American Southwest Conference at the NCAA Division III level. McMurry had previously been NCAA Division III until 2011 when they went to Division II before returning to Division III in 2014.
Moreno said she is planning on majoring in interior design and minoring in business management.
Moreno will be a good five hours driving time from home.
“I will miss my friends, the other people I know and the memories of growing up here,” she said.
