Ambulance struck by motorist on its way to a call Sunday evening
Hallettsville police cited a motorist Sunday evening in the 800-block of West Fairwinds Street (U.S. Highway 90A) after the driver failed to control his speed and struck the side of a Lavaca County EMS ambulance while that vehicle was responding to an emergency call just west of Hallettsville.
Neither the EMS crew nor the occupants of the other vehicle were injured in the collision, HPD reported.
Another in-service ambulance was summoned to transport the patient from the original 911 call, and both EMS employees were transported to Lavaca Medical Center for evaluation, per their accident protocol, EMS Director Michael Furrh said.
Besides the late evening accident, Sunday was a particularly busy day for local EMS crews, Furrh noted. LCEMS responded to a total of 16 calls for service on June 26.
“That may not sound like much, but when you consider the size and response area of our county, it adds up quickly,” Furrh said. “Our hats are off to all our hard-working EMTs and Paramedics.”
HPD, after further investigation, determined that the motorist of the other vehicle failed to control his speed, which caused him to strike the side of the ambulance, which had its warning lights and sirens activated at the time of the accident.
The driver was later issued a citation.
