Shiner Little League: Junior softball gets second in sectional tournament

Minor and Major baseball, and Junior softball teams  played in sectional tournaments last week with the Junior softball placing runner up in their sectional tournament.
Junior Softball
Shiner 9, EB 8

The Shiner Major Softball team had to come from behind several times in the Sectional tournament opener July 5 in Falls City to post a 9-8 win over East Bernard. Shiner trailed 8-2 in the fifth inning and was down 8-5 in the sixth but outscored EB 4-0 for the win.

There was no comeback this time for Shiner as Rockport-Fulton had a big second inning with nine runs scored on about eight hits to deal Shiner a 13-2 loss on July 6.
Both sides went in order in the first frame. Shiner got a hit by Dejah Mathis in the bottom of the second for their first hit of the game.
Rockport-Fulton took advantage of some walks in the third to score two runs; Shiner made a big play on defense to start the inning — catcher Sloane Kocian passed to first baseman Tatum Walker for an out on the batter and Walker then passed to third baseman Eden Rodriguez for the out on the runner and the double play.
In the bottom of the inning, Kocian got a two-out double but Shiner did not score a run.
In the fourth, Rockport-Fulton got a triple and scored a run for a 12-0 lead.
Shiner ended the shutout in the bottom of the inning — Sadie Carter got the leadoff walk; Klair Hailey singled; Reagan Fluitt reached on an error while Carter scored. Bella Carlise grounded out to first base to score Hailey.
Rockport-Fulton added one run in the top of the fifth and Shiner got close to scoring a run as  Walker was walked and eventually got to third before being thrown out at home on Hailey’s ball in play to third.
Offensively for Shiner, Kocian was 2-for-3 with one double; Carter was 1-for-2 with a run; Hailey hit 1-for-3, 1 run; Dejah Mathis was 1-for-3 and Ebey Johnson had one RBI. In the circle, Carter worked four innings, 12 runs, nine hits, four walks and three strikeouts. Walker pitched one inning with run, hit, walk and strikeout.

Shiner rebounded in a 12-0 shutout of the combined Goliad/Yorktown team on Thursday with a four-run third inning and three-run inning in the sixth. Shiner scored twice in the opening inning and went up 3-0 in the second before taking a 7-0 lead after three. They scored twice in fifth and took the score to 12-0 in the sixth.
Kocian scored two runs; Rodriguez chipped in a run; Aya Terry scored one run; Carlise had two runs; Carter scored twice; Johnson plated one run and Fluitt scored three runs.
R-F 6, Shiner 5
Shiner rematched Rockport-Fulton on Friday evening with a chance to force a second game to determine the championship.
Shiner grabbed the advantage with four runs in the third inning to come back from a 1-0 deficit to lead 4-1 and was ahead 5-2 after six frames before R-F scored three in the seventh and one in the eighth to claim an 6-5 win and the tournament championship.
In the third frame, Summer Terry reached on an error and scored on a Kocian double. Rodriguez singled Kocian; Mathis got a hit to score Rodriguez and she later put Shiner ahead 4-1 on a sacrifice by Walker.
Shiner went ahead 5-2 in the sixth as Terry got a two-out single and scored on a Kocian hit.
Offensively, Kocian was 2-for-4, run, two doubles, two RBI; Rodriguez went 2-for-4, run, RBI; Mathis hit 2-for-4 with one run; Carter was 2-3; Terry hit 1-for-4 with two runs and Walker had an RBI. Carter pitched seven innings, five runs on nine hits, two walks and nine strikeouts. Lauren Springfield went one inning, one batter hit, one run and two strikeouts.
Minor Baseball
Sealy 22, Shiner 11

Every set of runs Sealy scored, Shiner was able to answer by scoring near Sealy’s number or equal to except in the fifth frame when Sealy scored nine of 10 runs for  22-11 win in a three-hour marathon game in Shiner’s opening game July 5 in Lockhart.
Sealy scored twice to open the game and Shiner came back to plate a run.
Sealy went ahead 8-1 with six runs in the top of the second, getting a three-run homer.  Shiner took advantage of four walks and picked up a hit to score five runs in the bottom of the inning.
Sealy outscored Shiner 4-3 in the third and both teams scored one run in the fourth box.
At the plate, Luke Spann got three hits, two runs, two RBI; Matthew Mozisek had a pair of hits, and had one RBI; Elijah Rodriguez got one hit and scored three runs; Luke Polasek had a hit and RBI; Paul Filip had one hit and scored one run;Gabe Werner added three runs, one RBI; Garrett Fric contributed one run, one RBI; Cam Turek scored one run.
Shiner had four players pitch — Werner started and went 1 1/3 innings, five runs, four hits, two walks, one batter hit. Spann tossed for 1 2/3 innings, eight runs, four hits, four walks; Grayson Neskora went 1 1/3 innings, seven runs, four hits, one strikeout; Turek pitched 2/3 innings, two runs, two hits.
Ganado 17, Shiner 13
Ganado beat Shiner 17-13 on July 5 to cap the tournament and season for Shiner.
