Shiner Volleyball:Lady Comanches place third in Schulenburg Tournament Silver bracket
SCHULENBURG — The Lady Comanches won third place in the Silver Bracket Schulenburg Tournament last Thursday through Saturday, winning three and losing five matches.
Pool A play (Thursday)
The Lady Comanches took runner up in Pool A with wins over Rice Consolidated and Round Top-Carmine, and lost to Columbus.
Columbus 2, Shiner 0
The Lady Comanches started Pool 1 play with 2021 Class 3A state semifinalist Columbus, losing tough in the opener 25-14 but battling hard in the second game 25-18.
With a small bevy of kills, the Lady Cardinals forged a 10-2 lead early in the first game.
Chelsea Whiddon and Lauren Faldyn provided some kills to cut Columbus’ lead a little to 13-8.
The Lady Cardinals powered to a 22-8 lead and went on to take the set despite Shiner scoring six of the last nine points of the set.
In the second set, Aimee Mitchon provided a couple of plays as the Lady Comanches went ahead 4-1 in the beginning.
The Lady Comanches held on to the advantage going up 8-4 with help from a Julie Ivy block. Columbus then outscored Shiner 5-1 before team blocks by Ivy/Mitchon, Mitchon/Chesney Machacek and a solo block by Mitchon gave Shiner a 13-9 lead. Columbus went on a 6-2 run to tie the set and then outscored Shiner 10-3 the rest of the way.

Shiner 2, Rice Consolidated 0
The Lady Comanches bounced back to sweep Rice Consolidated 25-10 and 25-20 in their next match. Charlotte Grosenbacher provided some serves while Rylee Vancura and Avery Boedeker had kills to put Shiner ahead 10-2 after the first dozen points in the first set. The Lady Comanches then went on a 12-7 run. and then on to the 25-10 win with aces from Ivy and Mitchon, and kills by Whiddon and Vancura.
The teams were even after the first eight points of the second game — Shiner got plays from Vancura, Callie Sevcik and Boedeker. The Lady Comanches scored nine of 13 points with Boedeker making a kill.
The Lady Comanches later led 23-15 after kills from Vancura, Machacek and Mitchon. Rice Consolidated managed a quick 4-0 run before Shiner finished off the set and the maatch with plays from Mitchon and Vancura.

Shiner 2, RTC 0
The Lady Comanches concluded their day with 25-15, 25-16 sweep of the Cubettes. Shiner scored the first three points of the opening game and rallied for a 12-6 lead after RTC tied the set at 3-3.
The Cubettes got within 15-13 before Shiner outscored them 10-2 with kills from Grosenbacher and Whiddon.
At the start of the second game, Shiner fell behind 4-3 but scored six straight points and stayed in the lead with Whiddon and Boedeker making contributions.
RTC got within 14-13 but the Lady Comanches outscored them 11-3 from t heir with serves from Grosenbacher and a kill from Machacek along the way.

Pool F play (Friday)
On Friday, the Lady Comanches played in Pool F along with Victoria St. Joe, Goliad and district opponent Schulenburg.
It was a tough day as the Lady Comanches were swept by St. Joe and Schulenburg, and fell to Goliad in three sets.
Goliad 2, Shiner 1
Shiner had the first game of the day against the Tigerettes and Goliad came back from a 1-0 deficit to win 23-25, 25-19, 25-17.
Vancura, Whiddon and Ivy all contributed plays at the net as the teams shared the first 24 points of the opening set.
Mitchon chipped in a block later as the Lady Comanches took a 17-14 lead before Goliad came back for ties at 17, 18, 19 and 20 before a 3-0 run that put them ahed 23-20. Shiner fought back with a 5-0 run to take the game.
In the second set, Mitchon made a kill and Sevcik got a couple of aces to give the Lady Comanches a 4-2 start.
Goliad went on a 9-3 run to turn a 12-11 Shiner lead into a 20-15 advantage for the Tigerettes and they were on the way to close out the set ahead 23-15 when a Mitchon kill sparked four straight points for Shiner and Goliad then scored the final two to pull away and tie the set at 1-1.
In the third game, after 15 points played, Goliad was ahead 10-5 before a Machacek kill and Blaschke ace helped Shiner pull within 11-9.
Goliad then scored 14 of the next 22 points to finish the set and the match

In their second Pool F match, Shiner battled TAPPS program Victoria St. Joseph, falling in two competitive sets, 25-16, 25-17.
In the first set, Shiner scored five of the first eight points. The Lady Flyers came back with a 10-4 run and gradually went ahead to 18-11 before outscoring the Lady Comanches 7-6 the rest of the way.
In the second game, St. Joe took a commanding 9-2 early advantage and a little later, 12-5. Shiner pulled a few points back and after the Lady Flyers led 19-9, the Lady Comanches closed the gap some with six of 10 points with help from Ivy and Mitchon before St. Joe took the second game 25-16 and the match.

The Lady Comanches got an August look at their district foes Lady Shorthorns.
The tournament hosts were able to surpass Shiner 25-20, 25-19.
A couple of early lead exchanges took place in the opening set; Shiner worked for a 7-7 tie with some help from Ivy.
The Lady ‘Horns then slightly outscored Shiner 8-5 over the next 12 points with Boedeker and Vancura getting a kill.
Schulenburg doubled their advantage, 18-12 and Shiner scored them 6-1 with a kill by Ivy, an ace from Whiddon and plays from Mitchon; the Lady ‘Horns then outscored Shiner 5-1 with a couple of kills in the process to take the first game.
In the second set, Schulenburg led 13-5 after 18 points followed by a 4-1 run by the Lady Comanches with a Mitchon/Machacek block and two kills from Vancura. Schulenburg held a an 8-5 scoring advantage to get ahead 22-14. The Lady Comanches attempted to get even getting late plays from Mitchon and Vancura but fell 25-19.
