Shiner Football: Comanches score twice against Burton, keep Panthers from scoring

The Shiner Comanches hosted Burton in their second and final scrimmage on Thursday evening. The scrimmage was cut short by several plays because of weather in the area.
The Comanches scored twice, one by each offensive group, and kept the Burton offense out of the end zone.
“Burton is a good team and has some talent. I liked the way our kids came out,” Shiner head coach Daniel Boedeker said. “We started out a little slow offensively but were able to do some good things. We did not stay on our blocks long enough a few times. That is something we can fix. I liked how aggressive our kids were; we went up against a fast defense and our angles were not as sharp as they needed to be.
In addition to preventing a Panther touchdown, Shiner also came up with a turnover.
“Our defense did better today of getting quickly to the football,” Boedeker said. “We did okay last week against Tidehaven but today we have 10 or 11 guys trying to fit where they are supposed to and understanding their role in our defense.”
Burton ran 22 total plays for 81 yards, rushing 15 times for 48 yards and 2-of-7 passing for 33 yards. They fumbled twice and lost once, got six first downs and were penalized five times for a total of 25 yards.
Shiner’s first offensive group scored on a 70-yard run on the first play of the scrimmage and later, the second offense scored on an 11-yard run.
The Comanches had 11 first downs, 30 plays for 207 yards, did not have a fun day passing, going 0-for-3 with an interception. Shiner had 27 carries for 207 yards. They fumbled once, did not lose it and had three flags for 20 yards.
The defense recovered a fumble.
The 2022 season officially starts tomorrow as the Comanches varsity are at Hallettsville for 7:30 p.m kickoff time. The Shiner junior varsity (home) and junior high teams (away) will play the Brahmas today.
