Charles “Ernest” New
Charles “Ernest” New peacefully passed away with his family by his side at the age of 89 on Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2022.
Ernest was born on Tuesday, Oct. 18, 1932, in Speaks to Oscar “Buck” and Ada Cook New.
Ernest graduated from Edna High School.
After graduation he served his country by enlisting in the U.S. Army from March of 1953 to March of 1955.
Ernest married the love of his life, Shirley Yendrey, on June 10, 1961.
He was a rice farmer and rancher. He loved gardening and hunting, and he loved his family.
Ernest is survived by his wife of 61 years, Shirley New; two sons, Charles New and Carl New; his daughter, Maudie Morton; his grandson, Zachary Morton, and a sister, Virgie Doyal.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Buck and Ada New, and his brother, OL New.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Hospice of South Texas or the Speaks Cemetery Association.
Visitation began at 12:30 p.m. and continued until 1:30 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 17 at Slavik Funeral Home Chapel in Edna. Funeral service followed at 1:30 p.m. with Brother Brent New officiating.
Interment followed at Speaks Cemetery in Speaks.
Pallbearers were Charles Kulow, Jim Fenner, William Bradbury, Kevin Cook, Delynn New and Ryan Little.
Honorary pallbearers were Zachary Morton, Jerry Teltschick, and David Teltschick.
Services have been entrusted to Russell Todish of Slavik Funeral Home, 209 N. Allen Street in Edna.
