Retiring of the Colors
HOW TO ACT WHEN AROUND FLAGS
What should you do whenever a flag is raised or lowered, one passes by on parade, or the national anthem is performed?
• During the ceremony of hoisting or lowering the flag or when the flag is passing in a parade or in review, all persons present (except those in uniform) should face the flag and stand at attention with the right hand over their hearts.
• Those present in uniform (which includes all active duty and former military in service organization uniforms like those worn by American Legion or VFW members, police officers, firemen and other uniformed first responder personnel, and other patriotic organizations in uniform such as Knights Columbus, Lions Clubs and other such groups with identifiable uniforms) should render a military salute.
• When not in uniform, men should remove their headdresses with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart.
• Those from other countries and noncitizens should likewise stand at attention. No salute is necessary, but they should remain quiet and respectful until the ceremony is complete.
• The salute to the flag in a moving column (like a parade) should be rendered the moment the flag passes, after which people are free to resume whatever they were doing prior to the flag’s passing.
