Jason Avery Smothers
Jason Avery Smothers of Hallettsville, passed away at the age of 37 on Monday, Oct. 10, 2022.
He was born on March 13, 1985 in Houston, to Trudy and Ken Smothers.
Jason grew up in Columbus, and never knew a stranger. He could light up any room with his million-dollar smile. He knew how to laugh and love well and was a devoted son, brother, grandson, nephew, and friend.
Jason was an avid sports fan, especially for his beloved Dallas Cowboys. He could tell you anything about the players, statistics, and history of the team and never missed a game. He also adored the Texas Longhorns, Houston Rockets, and Houston Astros. When he watched his games, he would tremble and shout with excitement.
Jason wrote a weekly sports column in the Columbus newspaper, the Citizen. He was the eternal optimist when covering his favorite teams - especially his alma mater, the Columbus Cardinals.
He lived in the Kenmar house in Smithville, for 15 years where he made many close friends. His favorite activities with them were bowling in Schulenburg, playing Uno and Yahtzee, and dances. He loved to watch the Round Rock Express baseball team play at the Dell Diamond stadium, go to the movies, visit Morgan’s Wonderland, and swim at Splashway.
Music played a huge part in Jason’s life. He loved to sing and listened to an eclectic mix of music.
Jason loved his friends and family deeply and would keep a count-down of days to the next gathering. He eagerly anticipated every gathering and holiday celebration. He was a passionate storyteller and loved to recount the memories in his life. His joy and love of life were contagious to those lucky enough to have known him.
Jason is survived by his father, Ken; brother, Chris, and sister, Kendra. He is also survived by his uncle, Joe, and aunt, Sheryl Fabrygel; his uncle, Steve and aunt, Lesa Smothers; his uncle, James Johnson, and his nine beloved cousins.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Trudy; his maternal grandparents, James and Mildred Johnson, and his paternal grandparents, Leon and Marionell Smothers.
