Moulton girls basketball: Kittens romp to 63-31 win over Luling

    Big, early-season wins are good for young teams like the Moulton Bobkittens.
    Moulton scored almost as many points in a 63-31 win over the Luling Lady Eagles Nov 15 as it did in its first two games combined.
    “We are a young and inexperienced team, and a game like this will help,” Kittens head coach Craig Barta said, adding that he had eight freshman and two sophomores in his program this season.
    The Kittens were led on the board by Mary-Claire O’Leary and Estefania Colchado, who bagged 19 points and 11 points, respectively.
    But it was the defensive play of the Kittens that helped them to victory.
    “We did well against Luling because of the pressure we were able to put on them,” Barta said. “We have to make people play fast and get steals off of them. If we can do that, we will be successful.
    The Lady Eagles started off strong with triples from Janeese Flowers and Meadow Guillen to help take an 8-0 lead in the first frame. 
    The Kittens rebounded with a 20-point run with nine points from ‘O’Leary and five from Abygail Tinajero to lead 20-8 at the conclusion of the quarter.
    Moulton added to its lead with six of the first eight points of the second box. The Kittens went ahead 34-14 later in the frame with buckets from Audrey Swineford and Addison Simper.
    The Kittens then scored five more points for a 39-14 halftime lead.
    In the third frame, Colchado banked in five points and Tinajero bagged four points as Moulton outscored Luling 13-6.
    Each team scored 11 points in the final eight minutes of the game, with  Houston leading Luling with six points and Swineford dropping four points for the Kittens.
