Susan Hohmann

Susan Arlene Short Hohmann, 66, a longtime resident of Wimberley, passed away on October 30, 2022 after a valiant struggle with heart failure.
Funeral services were held on November 7, 2022 in Austin, with the Rev. Herb Beyer officiating.
Susan was laid to rest on the family lot in the Witting Cemetery in Witting.
Pallbearers were brothers-in-law, Kenneth Dally, Dan Hicks and Steve Kupka; nephews, Karl Dalley, Kenan Dalley, Paul Dierschke and Michael Dierschke; and grand-nephews, Brandon Dierschke and Dylan Dierschke.
A breast cancer survivor, Susan was born on October 9, 1956 in Port Arthur,  to Joseph Paul and Patricia Ann Prewitt Short.
Her early years were spent in the Golden Triangle of Texas. She often went camping, fishing, or crabbing with her family and she loved nature her entire life.
In the late 1960s, Susan moved to Austin. After struggling to find her niche in life, she joined her mother at the IRS in 1985 as a Data Transcriber. She excelled at organizing and soon moved into Work Leader and management positions. She worked in several areas of the IRS but her favorite activities were instructing and writing training material.
Susan married Harvey Hohmann on July 27, 1991 at a friend’s home in Wimberley. After living in Austin, the couple moved to Wimberley in June, 1992 with their newborn son, Stephen.
In the years before Stephen started school, Susan and her family took many short vacations while school was in session to avoid the summer crowds. They traveled mostly inside Texas to museums, parks, historic sites, and several zoos, but also to Carlsbad Cavern. They often camped and went through a progression of ever larger tents. Susan enjoyed seeing new places and these trips gave her many happy memories.
Though an introvert by nature, Susan enjoyed teaching. She taught many classes at the IRS. Susan also helped teach other IRS employees how to be instructors and once even helped instruct a class on how to teach others to teach.
Susan also spent several years leading the Education ministry at The Lutheran Church of the Resurrection in Wimberley, where she ran the Sunday School and Vacation Bible School.
In 1998 Susan became the training coordinator for her entire department. She also did special projects for her manager and was selected for course development. Susan proved so valuable that she was often specifically requested to be included in course development projects. These projects usually took place at other IRS sites and allowed her to visit places like historic Boston, the Indianapolis Speedway, and Churchill Downs.
Harvey and Stephen would often join Susan over weekends and they visited places like Yosemite National Park, King’s Island, and San Francisco. On one memorable occasion, the family spent three weeks in New England.
Health issues forced Susan to retire in March, 2021. Declining health forced Susan into the hospital on September 7, 2022. Despite early signs that she might recover, her condition began to worsen. After a brief period under hospice, Susan passed away on October 30, 2022. She had reached the age of 66 years and 21 days.
Survivors include her husband, Harvey Hohmann of Wimberley (formerly of Shiner); son, Stephen Hohmann of Wimberley; brother, Mike Short; sisters, Kay Dalley, Paula Pursche, Sandra Hicks, and Jennifer Huff; aunt, Annette Spadora; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins as well as her friends and coworkers.
