Little League: Major, Minor teams compete in zone tournaments

Shiner Little League Major and Minor softball and baseball teams started their East Zone Tournaments last Friday

Major Softball
Shiner 16, Luling 0

A nine-run bottom of the second helped Shiner to open the tournament with a 16-0 win over Luling on Friday night.
To open the bottom of the second and ahead 3-0, Emori Rodriguez singled, went to second on the error and went all the way home on the throw.  Kendyl Boehm got on base on an error and continued to second on the throw. Annie Werner was walked; Boehm later scored on a passed ball and Hayden Rother got a hit to score Werner.
Taylor Kocian then dropped a ball into the outfield for a two-run, in-the-park home run to give Shiner a 8-0 lead.
 Kenzie Springfield earned base on balls and took second on a passed ball; Eastyn Pohler was walked and both runners later advanced one base on a passed ball. Emery Kennedy brought in both players on a two-run triple; Shiner added one more run as Reese Patek was walked and later scored.
Rodriguez and Boehm were both walked to start the bottom of the third. Rodriguez scored and Boehm went to second on an error. Boehm was brought home on a hit by Werner. Grace Nevlud was walked and Hayden Rother scored Werner and Nevlud to end the game.
Hayden Rother got a leadoff single in the first frame and later advanced home on a passed ball; Springfield and Pohler were walked, and both later scored on wild pitches.
 Kocian got the win for Shiner in the circle with a two-hit shutout, one walk and seven strikeouts in three frames pitched.
At the plate, Hayden Rother was 3-for-3, two runs, three RBI and a triple; Kocian hit 1-for-2, home run, 2 RBI and Kennedy went 1-2, one run, two RBI and a triple.

Hallettsville 2, Shiner 1
Shiner held in Hallettsville in check but came up short on Saturday evening, falling 2-1.
All three runs came in the first frame with Hayden Rother getting a base hit and scored on an error.
Kocian pitched, yielding four hits, two runs and striking out nine batters. Rother, Rodriguez and Patek all had one hit.
 Hallettsville’s Paeyln Etzler threw a three-hitter with a run and fanning nine.
Shiner left five runners on base in the game.
Shiner 9, Luling 2
Shiner played Luling for the second time in the tournament and came away with a 9-2 win to set up a rematch with Hallettsville on Monday.
Hallettsville 3, Shiner 2
Another close battle with Hallettsville and plenty of good defense resulted in another close game between the two teams as Hallettsville scraped out a 3-2 win on Monday night to claim the tournament championship.
Hallettsville opened the game with a leadoff hit and a walk before Shiner reduced the threat on a double play.
Hallettsville scored in the top of the third as Ava Caldwell got a one-out single, took second on a passed ball, moved on to third on a sacrifice groundout by Ashten Loudon and later scored on an error.
Shiner nearly equalized in the bottom of the inning — Presley Rother hit a triple and a little later, tried to take advantage of a passed ball to head for home but was thrown out.
Hallettsville took a 3-0 lead in the top of the fifth as Caitlyn Halata got a leadoff walk, stole second and got to third on the same error that allowed Etzler to reach base, Heidi Grahmann scored both runners on a two-run single.
Shiner had a fast response: Rodriguez got a leadoff walk and went to second while Springfield reached on an error. Both players advanced one base on a wild pitch.  Rodriguez scored on a sacrifice by Kocian and Springfield went home on an RBI single by Pohler.
Kocian pitched six innings  with three runs on three hits, one batter hit, two walks and eight strikeouts. Pohler was 1-for-2 with an RBI; Presley Rother was 1-for-1 and a triple; Kocian had one RBI with Rodriguez and Springfield scoring one run each.
Kayla Kurtz, Caldwell and Grahmann all had one hit for Hallettsville while Etzler ceded two runs on two hits and struck out three, and walked three.

Major Baseball
Shiner opened their East Zone Tournament in Yoakum on Friday, losing a close game to Cuero 2-1. Shiner played Gonzales on Saturday evening, falling 24-7.

Minor Softball
Shiner won their opener against Yoakum 10-7 on Friday and turned around to defeat host Lockhart 10-4 on Saturday. They were scheduled to play Hallettsville at 8 p.m. yesterday.

Minor Baseball
Shiner fell to Cuero 15-10 in opener on Friday and fell to Yoakum on Monday.
