JL softball wins Sectional tournament the hard way

PORT LAVACA – The Hallettsville Jr. League All-Stars had a huge task in front of them in the finals of the Section 4 Tournament Saturday.

Hallettsville had to beat Rockport-Fulton twice to advance.

Hallettsville aced the test with an 18-8 win in the first game and 14-2 in the second.

Hallettsville’s offense produced 14 hits and used 10 R-F errors in the 18-8, seven-inning victory in Game 1.

Ainsley Grahmann and Kennedy Zappe led the charge with both going 3-for-3.

Grahmann drove in one run and scored three, while Zappe collected three RBI and scored trice.

Addison Matula singled, doubled and scored three runs with a run batted in.

Layney Connor had two hits in four trips to the plate with a RBI; Allison Clark drove in two runs with a single; Kendall Thompson singled and drove in a run and Sophia Etzler hit an RBI single.

Hallettsville took a 9-0 lead after three and a half innings and had leads of 11-3 and 11-8 before an eight-run seventh outburst.

In the nightcap, Hallettsville run-ruled R-F, 14-2. Hallettsville had a 3-0 lead prior to an 11-run fifth inning.

Elizabeth Felcman tossed a four-hitter with four strikeouts and a walk. Both R-F runs were earned.

The locals had only four hits, but made the most of seven bases on balls and four R-F miscues.

Grahmann hit a tworun double. Ashlyn Pustka (run, two RBI), Grahmann (two RBI, run), Connor (RBI, run) Etzler (run, RBI), Felcman (run, two RBI) and Zappe (RBI), all singled. Clark scored three runs, Thompson two and Kinley Migl and Landyn Migl one apiece.

R-F 5, H’ville 2

Hallettsville fell to R-F, 5-2, Thursday, July 6 to put them in the loser’s bracket.

Elizabeth Felcman went the distance and ceded four earned runs, and struck out three. Felcman threw 67 pitches, 51 for strikes.

Hallettsville had five hits and left seven on base. Sophia Etzler had two hits in three trips to the plate with a RBI; Ainsley Grahmann doubled and drove in a run; Addison Matula doubled and scored; and Kendall Thompson singled.R-F led 5-0 before Hallettsville scored its two runs in the sixth inning to avoid the shutout.

H’ville 14, Calhoun 2

Hallettsville held a 3-0 lead before exploding for 11 runs in the fifth inning in the five-inning, mercy rule 14-2 victory.

Elizabeth Felcman pitched the five innings and surrendered four hits, fanned four and free-passed one. Felcman threw 65 pitches, 46 for strikes.

Hallettsville made the most of six hits and batters were issued seven walks to go along with four Calhoun errors.

Ainsley Grahmann doubled and drove in two runs. Felcman, Ashlyn Pustka, Sophia Grahmann, Kennedy Zappe and Layney Connor all had singles. Grahmann drove in two runs.

H’ville 3, Calhoun 2

Hallettsville took a 3-2, walk-off victory over Calhoun Wednesday, July 5.

Ainsley Grahmann got the win and was the starter for Hallettsville. She gave up two runs (no earned), two hits, walked three and struck out 10.

Hallettsville had seven hits with Kennedy Zappe having the only multi-hit game. Zappe went 2-for-3.

Grahmann doubled and drove in a run. Addison Matula, Ashlyn Pustka, Layney Connor and Kinley Migl had base hits. Matula, Migl and Grahmann drove in runs.
