Shiner volleyball: Shiner wins Silver Bracket in Schulenburg
The Shiner Lady Comanches volleyball team went 5-3 and won the Silver Bracket Championship last Thursday through Saturday in the Schulenburg Championship.
Pool A
Shiner went 2-1 on the first pool play day Thursday, coming in second in Pool A.
Shiner 2, Edna 1
Shiner opened the tournament with a 2-1 (24-26, 25-19, 25-11) win over Edna, their second victory over the Cowgirls in just a few days.
Shiner 2, Burton 0
The Lady Comanches swept Burton 25-14 and 25-22 in their second match.
Vict. SJ 2, Shiner 0
The Lady Comanches fell to Victoria St. Joseph 25-19 and 25-19 to end the first day.
Pool F
Shiner was moved into Pool F for Friday’s action along with three 3A teams in East Bernard, Goliad and Industrial.
The Lady Comanches lost their first two matches before winning the third to finish 1-2 on the day.
Goliad 2, Shiner 0
The Lady Comanches started Friday morning against the Tigerettes, falling in two close sets.
Goliad took a 25-22 win in the first set.
In the second game, they led 13-9 after 22 points scored.
Shiner used an 8-4 run to tie the game at 17-17 and then scored seven of the next 13 to lead 24-23 with help from kills by Rylee Vancura, Aimee Mitchon and Chelsea Whiddon, getting close to winning the set to force a third one but Goliad came back to knot it up at 26-26 and then scored two straight points to breathe a sigh of relief in a 28-26 win.
EB 2, Shiner 0
The Brahmarettes swept Shiner 25-16, 25-14 in the Lady Comanches’ second match of the day.
Callie Sevcik had a block and Morgan Lenehan added a kill to give Shiner a 5-3 lead after the set’s first eight points. East Bernard then outscored Shiner 9-2 for a 12-7 advantage.
Later, two more kills from Vancura and one from Sevcik kept the Lady Comanches still within five, 20-15, before the Brahmarettes scored five of the next six points to conclude the first game.
East Bernard started the second game hot with 12 of the first 15 points.
Sevcik caused some issues with her serves and Whiddon got a kill later in the game but Shiner could not get any closer than eight points.
Shiner 2, Industrial 0
Shiner wrapped up the day on a good note with a 25-14, 25-19 win over the Lady Cobras.
Sevcik and Lenehan combined on a block as Shiner recorded 10 of the first 13 points.
Industrial battled to within 14-10 followed an 11-4 run by Shiner to take the set with Whiddon serves and an ace, and a Vancura kill.
In the second game, the Lady Cobras scored six of the first nine points and went up 8-4. Shiner used a 9-5 run with kill and ace from Mitchon, and kills by Lenehan and Vancura.
A kill from Mitchon, JaMya Wright and Chesney Machacek, along with a Sevcik ace put Shiner ahead 20-16 and a 5-3 run by the Lady Comanches finished the set and the match.
Silver Bracket
The Lady Comanches were placed in the Silver Bracket for Saturday’s play.
They beat Yoakum 2-0 and then defeated No. 7 Weimar in the Silver Championship 2-0.

The Lady Comanches beat Yoakum in two sets 28-16, 25-17.
Shiner 2, Weimar 0
Shiner downed district rival and state ranked Weimar 25-17, 26-24 to claim the Silver bracket championship.
Mitchon had three blocks, three digs, one kill; Sevcik added six digs, three kills, one assist, one ace; Charlotte Grosenbacher had seven digs; Whiddon added five digs, four kills, three bocks, one assist; Machacek had one kill; Erin Hajek had one assist; Wright had four kills, two digs.
Kylynn Ramirez totaled three digs, two aces, one kill; Meghan Blaschke had nine assists, nine digs, two aces; Lenehan had two blocks, one kill; Vancura finished with six kills, six assists, three digs, one ace.

Vancura and Whiddon were chosen for the All-Tournament Team.
