Brahmas Have Their Way With Shiner

The Hallettsville Brahmas handed new head coach Levi Montgomery a 41-8 victory over Shiner to make his debut special at Comanche Stadium Friday night. “Any time you can go to Shiner and win a football game, we’re going,” Montgomery said. “Shiner is a storied program and a Lavaca County rival that is going to be tough year in and year out. We were pleased to come out on top.”

Hallettsville totaled 404 yards in the contest and committed just one turnover. The Brahmas rushed for 294 yards and averaged 8.9 yards per carry.

Quarterback Jorian Wilson completed 6 of 11 passes for 111 yards and two touchdowns.

Halfback Damarion Austin led the running game with 111 yards on 8 carries and scored once.

Price accounted for 138 all-purpose yards.

The Brahma defense was up to the task and held Shiner to 224 yards and forced three Comanche turnovers.

“Our boys overall did what we asked them to do. They played hard and were consistent,” Montgomery said. “There was a time in the second quarter when Shiner had our backs to the wall, but we were able to hold them off.”

The Brahmas leapt out to a 21-8 half time lead.

Price went 55 yards for the first score. The drive covered 83 yards and took only 6 plays.

Wilson threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Price.

After a turnover, the Brahmas upped the score to 21-8 after Price threw a halfback pass to covering 24 yards.

Second half touchdowns were a 38-yard pass from Wilson to Gerke, a 49-yard sprint by Austin and halfback Tradyn Williams’ 4- yard run.

“As with the first game, there’s much we have to improve,” Montgomery said. “Defensively we gave up to many explosive plays. Offensively, we had a couple, and as a team, we committed too many turnovers, and as a team we had too many penalties. Those are the things we coaches need to fix.”
