Tribe Makes it 3 in a Row
It took a day to play Sacred Heart’s game with Houston KIPP Sunnyside, but the wait was worthwhile.
The Indians scored 28 unanswered points to start the contest en route to a 48-16 victory here Saturday night.
The Indians have started the season 3-0 for the first time since 2018.
The game was cancelled Friday night in Houston because of the field conditions at the Senators’ field.
The Indians took advantage of a short field with scoring drives of 35, 56, 49, 48, 33 and 50 yards and garnered 295 yards of offense.
Flanker Nic Angerstein, quarterback Andrew Steffek and halfback Brady Haas had a big night for the Indian.
Angerstein caught scoring passes of 35 and 29 yards and kicked two field goals of 37 and 34 yards.
Haas rushed for 98 yards on only 8 carries with two touchdowns.
Halfback Cade Steffek contributed 73 rushing yards and touchdown runs of 2 and 32 yards.
Andrew Steffek was an efficient 8-for-10 passing for 107 yards and two scores.
“Another good effort by our kids,” coach Alex Seydler said. “We contained their quarterback most of the game and made things hard for him. Offensively, we had a nice balance of rushing and passing and keeping possession of the football. Special teams did a great job also. We had good field position the entire game and were able to take advantage of it.”
The Indians gave a little on defense, but only bent twice.
KIPP quarterback Timonthy Carter Jr. flung the football 35 times, completing 15 for 232 yards and two touchdowns.
KIPP went three-and-out on its first possession and a punt return by Angerstein gave the Indians possession on the Senators’ 35. On the very first play, Andrew tossed a 35-yard touchdown pass to Angerstein. Angerstein kicked the first of 6 extra points.
On its third drive, Sacred Heart drove 56 yards in 5 plays capped by a 2-yard run by Brady Haas.
The Indians increased the margin to 28-0 on a 29-yard touchdown pass to Angerstein and a 2-yard run by Cade Steffek with the latter set up by Timber Janak’s fumble recovery. The first drive went 49 yards and the second 48 yards.
KIPP got on the board with a 58-yard pass from quarterback Carter Jr. to wide out Rodney Wilson Jr. to cut the lead to 28-8 at the intermission.
