Special days are nice, but every day would be better
They are on the streets 24/7 protecting the community

In times of crisis and danger, some unsung heroes put their lives on the line to protect and serve us all. They are the fearless men and women who serve as our first line of defense, answering the call when disaster strikes. Police officers, firefighters, and Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) are the epitome of bravery and selflessness, dedicated to preserving life and maintaining order in the face of chaos.
When terrorists, using four commercial aircraft, cowardly attacked our country on Sept. 11, 2001, brave individuals responded and, without hesitation, ran towards the danger while others were running from it. Overall, it is estimated that nearly 3,000 people were killed on that dreadful day. Attacks on the Twin Towers in New York, and the Pentagon in Washington, pushed emergency responders to the limit.
Because of the actions of the 40 passengers and crew aboard one of the planes, Flight 93, the attack on the U.S. Capitol was thwarted. Flight 93 did not arrive at the hijackers’ intended target. The plane crashed in a reclaimed strip mine near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, just 18 minutes flying time from Washington, DC. Countless lives were spared thanks to their heroic actions, but all on board Flight 93 were lost.
Since 911, more emphasis has been put on recognizing those who serve and protect. People are encouraged to personally thank police, firefighters, and first responders for their service.
This year September 16 has been scheduled for "Thank a Police Officer Day" - the day was created to be honored on the third Saturday of the month. Coming up in October, "National Night Out" will be observed with many communities having block parties. Members of the police, firefighters, and first responders are invited to come and get to know local citizens.
In our community, we are fortunate to have dedicated individuals in law enforcement who are on the job 24 hours a day to keep us safe. As well as members of the volunteer fire department and EMTs. In my opinion, these people and members of the military should be thanked for their service at every opportunity.
It's been my experience that it nearly seems to embarrass them when they are thanked - it's as if they are not used to being appreciated.
I find it disgusting to hear news stories about police being ambushed for no reason. Ironically, the same people who hate law enforcement and want to defund police departments are the first ones to cry for help when they are in a bind.
Back in the day, most people wouldn't have dared attack a police officer. Why? Because they knew, without a doubt, there would be consequences. Until we return to those days when criminals were punished for their crimes, these things will continue. When prosecutors fail to follow the law and continue to turn repeat offenders loose on the community, law-abiding people can never feel safe.
Remember, as we sleep, brave men and women are on the streets protecting us. For that, they should be thanked every day.
