Local high school football: Shiner hosts Ganado to start district; St. Paul at Boerne Geneva

Shiner starts district play with Ganado at home while St. Paul plays on the road for the third straight week as they head to Boerne to play the Geneva School Eagles.

Ganado at Shiner
The Comanches open district play by hosting Ganado (3-1) on Friday.
Shiner went 0-4 in non-district against four stout 3A teams.
“We hope we learned a lot from our mistakes in non district,” Comanches head coach Daniel Boedeker said.
The Indians are averaging 39.25 points a game and giving up just 12.25 points a game.
Ganado’s only loss is 35-27 to East Bernard, and have won against Van Vleck (20-14), Palacios (61-0) and Danbury (49-0).
Ganado is balanced on offense with 163.3 yards a game on the ground and 154.3 through the air.
Quarterback Bryce Ullman has thrown for 617 yards on 37-of-68 passing, 10 touchdowns and one interception.
He is also the team’s leading rusher with 264 yards and four touchdowns. L. Logan Bures has ran for 185 yards and three touchdowns.
Receiver Landon Hicks has a dozen catches for 261 yards and three touchdowns;
Austen Pena has 11 grabs for 147 yards and three touchdowns.
“Their offensive line has good size and they have good splits to keep us away from the quarterback,” Boedeker said. “On defense, we have work to do in the trenches.”
On the defense, Hicks is the top tackles with 29 solo tackles, five assists, 5.5 tackles for loss and 2.0 sacks.
“They have quickness on the defensive line with defensive tackle Dylan Holt standing out as he gets into the backfield a lot,” Boedeker said. “Our offensive line will have to establish the line of scrimmage and stay on blocks. We need to control the football with being able to hit a big play or two.”

SP at Boerne Geneva
The Cardinals wrap up a three-game road trip with a visit to Boerne Geneva this week.
St. Paul has won two and lost two after four rounds: Flatonia and Legacy Prep managed to get by the Cardinals while St. Paul has defeated TMI and Dallas CHE.
The Eagles are 2-2 after four games, dropping games to Blanco (57-35) and Dilley (23-7), and beating Katy Harmony School of Innovation (63-0) and La Pryor (35-12).
“They are going to be, by far, the best team on our schedule to this point,”  Cardinals head coach Mike Jackson said. “They are big and play physical.”
Geneva is averaging 35.0 points a game and yielding 23.0 points a game.
The Eagles lean towards the pass with 155.5 yards a game and average 64.3 yards rushing a game.
Jacob Rosenstiel is the leading passer with 37-of-76 passes for 483 yards, six touchdowns and three interceptions.
Top receiver is KP Fitzgerald who has 280 yards on 19 catches and three touchdowns.
Noah Brunsvold is the leading rusher with 70 yards and one touchdown while Josh Dennis had three touchdowns.
“Against Legacy Prep, we did not play the ball well and we have to improve that especially on the back end,” Jackson said. “Until we can do that well, other teams will attack us through the air.”
Jackson said the offense needs to end more drives with touchdowns.
“In the second half against LP, we gotten inside the red zone several times but did not come away with points. We just need to make sure we finish drives. We had almost 500 yards last week and when an offense has that much, usually the team wins.”
