Brahmas Notch Hoco Win

Homecoming can always be a distraction, but it didn’t seem to bother the Hallettsville Brahmas in a 42-17 victory over Cypress Christian here Friday night.

Hallettsville played its “cleanest” game of the season with zero turnovers and just one penalty.

“Pleased with the way our kids handled homecoming and all the fanfare that comes with it,” Brahma head coach Levi Montgomery said. “We had some young guys step up to play some positions due to injuries, and we were still able to maintain a higher level of play."

Wide out Layne Gerke and halfback Jashaun Price both had a huge night for the Brahmas.

Gerke scored three touchdowns - two on pass receptions - and caught 6 passes for 58 yards and added 26 yards rushing on 5 carries.

Just before the end of the first quarter, Gerke scored on a 2-yard run after his 40-yard punt return gave the Brahmas great field position on the Cypress Christian 28.

The Warriors trimmed the lead to 14-7 on halfback John Kelly’s 65-yard touchdown on the third play of the second period.

The Brahmas’ next score came following a 68- yard, 8-play march. A pair of 11-yard gains by Price led to his 2-yard scoring run with 2:37 remaining in the first half.

The Warriors then drove to the Brahma 7 prior to Owen Witschonke’s 24-yard field goal with no time left in the half to cut the lead to 21-10 at the intermission.

There was no scoring in the third quarter before the Brahmas tallied 21 unanswered points in the fourth.
