Traffic halted on U.S. 90-A East, near Sheridan, following accident

Highway 90-A East, near Sheridan in Lavaca County, was closed to through traffic for over seven hours last Wednesday afternoon due to an accident involving a vehicle and an 18-wheeler.

According to a report from Texas Department of Public Safety trooper Sgt. Ruben San Miguel of Victoria, the accident took place around 1:04 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 4, when a 2019 Ford Explorer driven by Steve Larry Sears, 77, of Hallettsville and traveling south approached the stop sign at the intersection FM 155 and Highway 90-A east.

San Miguel said at the same time a 2019 International truck/tractor, towing a trailer was traveling east on the highway and driven by Dylan Stone Sterling, 30, of Italy, Texas.

The DPS report said the Ford Explorer failed to yield the right of way as it turned left and pulled in front of the 18-wheeler.

San Miguel said the 18-wheeler was unable to avoid the Ford and the truck/tractor’s bumper collided with the front right quarter panel of the Explorer.

The collision caused the truck/tractor and its trailer to spin 180 degrees and overturn with the truck/tractor facing west and the trailer resting upside down northeast of the intersection.

The Ford Explorer came to rest east of the intersection on the west bound shoulder.

San Miguel said the truck/tractor became fully inflamed and burned, but the trailer was not damaged by the fire.

The scene was finally cleared at 10:41 p.m. and San Miguel said the investigation into the accident is ongoing.

Both Sears and Sterling were transported by the Lavaca County EMS to Lavaca Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.
