Local high school football: Cards host NBC, Shiner heads to Kenedy for regular-season finales

Both the Cards and Comanches return from their open week as St. Paul hosts New Braunfels Christian and Shiner is at Kenedy to conclude the regular season.

St. Paul hosts New Braunfels Christian with both teams seeking their first district win; NBC is 2-6 overall and 0-2 in district.
NBC has scored 24.25 points a game and yielded 43.25 points a gameThe Wildcats  are pass heavy on offense with at least three dozen pass attempts a game.
“They are going to really sling it. We will need to be ready to defend the pass,” St. Paul head coach Mike Jackson said.
Parker Joseph has hit 152-of-311 passes for 1,919 yards, 18 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He averages. 12.6 yards a completion and 239.9 yards a game.
Crew Wright has over 1,000 receiving yards with 70 grabs for 1,089 yards,15.6 average and 13 touchdowns.
Dillan Wickham leads the ground game with 532 yards on 68 attempts and seven touchdowns, 5.3 per carry and 66.5 a game.
“Their passing style is a quick attack; they try to throw it as fast as possible,” Jackson said. “We need to play well on the back side and pressure the quarterback as well as stop their run game when they do run the ball.”
The injury bug has caused the Cardinals to have to adjust personnel in the last couple of weeks.
“We will need to play to everybody’s strengths and put the kids into the best positions for them to succeed,” he said. “We have had to make some tweaks and move some kids around to new positions. We have had a week to prepare them.”
Shiner at Kenedy
With third place in the district wrapped  up, Shiner closes out the regular season at Kenedy. The Lions are 3-6 (0-5), are scoring 23.55 points a game and yielding 35.44 games a contest.
Kenedy’s  Slot-T offense produces 232.4 yards a game, 54.1 passing and 178.3 rushing.
“They are going to play physical and come right at us with their Slot-T,” Shiner head coach Daniel Boedeker said.
Leading the ground attack is Daniel Pena who has 525 yards on 96 carries and seven touchdowns with a 5.5 average and 65.6 yards a game.
David Salas has hit 26-of-69 passes for 422 yards, nine touchdowns and five interceptions with 16.2 yards per completion. David Fraga  has 171 yards on 10 catches and four touchdowns.
“They have a big offensive line, their quarterback is big and runs hard and their fullback runs well between the tackles,” Boedeker said. “We will need to win the line of scrimmage and tackle well.”
Defensive leader is Ayden Castillo with 25 tackles, 25 assists and 3.0 tackles for loss.
“Pad level during offensive blocking will be important and we need be able to put together some drives. We have to have zero turnovers and eliminate penalties,” Boedeker said.
