Shiner footbal: Shiner, Holland square off for first time in area round
Friday is round two, AKA area round for the Shiner Comanches football team as they play Holland Hornets at 7 p.m. at Smithville High School.
The Comanches wrapped up the regular season at 4-6 and got a 40-6 win over the Freer Buckaroos in the bi-district round of the playoffs.
The Hornets are undefeated and posted a 55-6 win over Harper in the bi-district round.
The Comanches and Hornets have never played each other on the football field.
“The Holland athletic program is very good. The football team always makes the playoffs,” Shiner head coach Daniel Boedeker said.
Holland’s offense is putting up 39.27 points a game and the defense is conceding 21.36 points a contest.
The Hornet can do a lot with their offense.
“They base out of the shotgun or pistol, and like to run the veer option, counter and power,” Boedeker said. “They also can line up in the spread and make use of their talented receivers.”
Holland’s main offensive threats are fullback Gavin Cruz, slot receiver/running back Christian Michalek and Ryan Steglich.
“Cruz does well running between the tackles; Michalek is one of their best athletes,” Boedeker said. “It will be very important to tackle well and get to the football. “Our defense will need to control the line of scrimmage.”
Holland’s defense is not particularly large but is aggressive and makes use of speed.
“They will come out in the ’50’, blitz and stunt a lot,” Boedeker said. “We will need to stay on our blocks longer. Holland is smaller than what we have faced earlier in this season but they have a lot of speed.”
The winner of this round will face either Mason or Ganado.
