YHS StuCo begins beautification project

The Student Council Environment and Energy Committee began a community-wide campaign back in September to begin beautifying the high school. The project is designed to enhance our school community by increasing school pride, encouraging excellence, and cultivating a more vibrant and supportive educational atmosphere.

As the Student Council Leadership team continues to visit with several local community organizations as well as city leaders, school administrators, and school board members; the response and the support have been overwhelming. Yoakum ISD school administrators and the School Board are committed to the longevity of the project. Mr. Kelley, superintendent of YISD, is extremely proud of the students at YHS and their commitment to their school. “YISD administration and our School Board are committed to supporting our students’ efforts by listening to their recommendations and providing them with a budget to maintain this project for years to come.” When Abbie Galvan approached Mrs. McDonald with the project proposal it was very important to Abbie that students were the ones that carried the vast amount of responsibility that would be needed to see this project to completion. “We have a lot of pride in our school and we want to make it better. We want to do the work and we want to raise the money to make this happen.” Abbie Galvan stated. “We know our school has done a lot to invest in our education and has spent a lot of money making sure we are able to achieve our goals; this is our way of giving back and doing our part.”

Kristin Hagan, STUCO advisor cannot say enough about what this project means to her as a teacher but also as a YHS alumni. “Being an alumnus, this project is close to my heart. It makes me happy that the current students have so much pride in YHS... They are essentially keeping YHS legacy and tradition alive.”
