Navidad River Bridge two-vehicle collision claims three lives

A tragic two-vehicle head-on collision on Sunday night, Dec. 10 resulted in three individuals losing their lives, including a well-known Hallettsville couple.
According to a report from the Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman Sgt. Ruben San Miguel, the accident took place approximately at 8:08 p.m. on the Navidad River Bridge about two miles west of Sublime.
In providing a description of the accident, San Miguel said a 2022 white Honda Accord driven by Marieli Abigail Sanchez, 25, of Victoria was traveling in the eastbound lane of Highway 90A when for some reason the Honda failed to drive in its lane and crossed the center line on the bridge.
San Miguel said at the same time a 2018 Ford Explorer traveling in the westbound lane and driven by David Carroll Jones 62, along with his wife, a front seat passenger, Carla Sue Jones, 62, of Hallettsville, was struck by the Honda.
San Miguel’s report said when the two vehicles collided it caused distributed damage to the Honda with the Ford receiving damage to the left front portion of the Explorer.He said after the impact, the Explorer spun back into the eastbound lane and struck the eastbound guardrail of the bridge and caused left panel damage to the Honda.
The Honda came to rest against the eastbound guardrail, facing west and the Explorer came to rest against the westbound guardrail, facing west.
San Miguel said after the crash, the Ford Explorer became fully engulfed in flames.
Precinct 1 Justice of the Peace, Steven Greenwell, declared Sanchez, as well as David and Carla Sue Jones deceased at the scene of the accident.
San Miguel said an investigation is ongoing in the fatal crash.
