Robert L. Matias

Robert Lee Matias, 72, of Shiner, passed on to his heavenly Lord Sunday January 7, 2024.

Robert was born on July 13, 1951, to the late Irene and Louis Frank Matias. Robert was
married to his loving wife Marie Simper of 50 years. They had three sons Jeff (Lesley) of Shiner,
James (Melissa) of Georgetown, and Justin (Patience) of Victoria. Robert was the oldest sibling
to 3 brothers: Stanley (Katy), Louis, Ronald (Janella). He was also raised with his aunt/sister,
Margaret Barton (Leon) of Round Rock. Robert was known as “PoPo” to his 14 grandchildren:
Ava, Addison, Brayden, Jace, Creighton, Colton, Emory, Bryce, Hallie, Gavin, Cora, Dylan,
Ruby, and Micah Matias.

Robert is preceded in death by his parents; grandparents, Louis Matias Sr., Mary Matias, Louis Targac, Hattie Jahn Targac, Rosie Targac; and granddaughter, Autumn Matias.

Robert graduated from St. Paul High School in 1969. After graduation, he went on to work for
Purina Mills where he worked for 25 years. He continued his career with Lavaca County for an
additional 12 years. After retiring from the county, Robert managed EJ’s Meat Company. He
operated EJ’s for 10 years, before retiring to spend time with his family.

Robert was a devout Catholic and a proud volunteer at Sts Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church
and Shiner Catholic School, participating in various roles. He was a member of the Knights of
Columbus, KJT, American Legion, and a Veteran of the Army Reserves. Robert embraced his
Czech heritage through polka, food, farming, and even spoke Czech. In his spare time, Robert
enjoyed attending his grandchildren's various events, spending time with his brothers,
gardening, tinkering with little projects and working on the farm. 

He enjoyed fishing and family vacations at the beach. Throughout his life, Robert was a dedicated sports fan. He enjoyed
cheering on his children and grandchildren in whatever sport they played or watching a Dallas
Cowboy or Houston Astros game.

A rosary/wake will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, January 9, 2024, with visitation preceding from 5-7 p.m. at Shiner Funeral Home.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at SS. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church in Shiner.

Burial to follow at Shiner Catholic Cemetery.

Pallbearers: Patrick Baker, Mark Baker, Matthew Baker, Donald Woods, Alan Aschenbeck, and Paul Schreiber.

Honorary pallbearers: Fred Patek, Harvey Dlouhy, Harvey Picha, Ronnie Leck, Louie Herman, Ron Jurica, and Richard White.
