YISD calls for May election

The Yoakum Independent School District has officially called for a May 4 election at the Jan. 8 school board meeting.
As of now, those that are up for re-election for their respective roles are President Glen Kusak, Vice President Terry Boening, and trustee Donnetta Sherrer.
YISD also board members took action in appointing Superintendent Tom Kelley as the Chief Election Officer of YISD. They also authorized to continue the Joint Election Agreement with the City of Yoakum and the Yoakum Hospital District.
Proclamations were also given out to several groups.
Andrea Reyes-Martinez was recognized for participating at the state level of the Spanish speaking event at the 2023 FFA Texas State Leadership Development Event Contest.
Bulldog band members were recognized for advancing to the 2023 state UIL competition. Also, Yoakum Bulldog Cross Country was recognized as well.
Yoakum Mayor Carl O’Neil commended the YISD school board members for their continued service and hard work.
Other items on the agenda included:
Maintenance and operations tax assessor collections came out to $8.9 million and interest and sinking came out to $4.5 million.
• Current enrollment numbers show 1,466 students. Last year at this time, enrollment numbers were at 1,504 students.
• Yoakum FFA/4-H Show is set for this weekend, Jan. 12 and Jan. 13.
• YISD is hosting Elementary and Jr. High School UIL meets. There will be an early release for this on Jan. 23.
