Political season heats up ahead of primaries

The weather outside might be frosty, but things are definitely heating up for those facing contested races in the upcoming primary elections set Tuesday, March 5.

The presidential elections take place in 2024, which if history serves as any judge means it will be an active year for voter turnout, with the big showdown for the nation’s highest office taking place in the November general election.

Until then, voters must decide who their party’s candidates will be, and for most races of a local concern, the winners of the countywide offices will be chosen in the Republican Party primary election process, as no Democrats filed office at the county level within our tri-county area including DeWitt, Gonzales and Lavaca counties. oyear for votersAll local contests will take place take place on the

• Monday, Jan. 29 — Great State Republicans (GSR) candidate forum at Hallettsville High, (see related story).

• Wednesday, Jan. 31 — Last day to register to vote in March 5 primary.

• Wednesday, Feb. 7 — Republican Women of Yoakum Area (RWOYA) candidate forum (featuring county candidates for DeWitt, Gonzales and Lavaca counties, Yoakum Community Center, doors open at 5 p.m.)

• Feb. 20 to March 1 — Early voting for the March primary.

• Tuesday, March 5 — Republican Party Primary Election Day.
